Bummed. They recently changed the tour for "safety reasons." No more free hairnets.
You watch a film about the company. Then you go into the factory where you see the homogenizers, pasteurizers, etc through a window. Then you look into the lab. Next, you look out into the garage at the tanker trucks unloading their milk.
After that, you watch a film on how the milk jugs are made and filled. The end. It's all about 28 minutes. You do not get to watch them make the jugs, fill/package them anymore. :-( Go somewhere else for a real tour.
Ever since the Mayfield family sold out to Dean Foods, the quality has really went downhill. The downsizing of the factory spearheaded by Tangela Arnwine, was the beginning of the end of the best ice cream and milk in the south. I never purchase their products anymore.
While I really enjoyed the Mayfield Tour with my daughter and granddaughter, I was disappointed with a product I buy alot of . The Fat Free Fudge Sticks, in the 24 pack. The last box I purchased in Cleveland Tn. at Cookes Food Store, had 2 sticks in almost every stick, which was not so tasty and my granddaughter did not like that. I have been buying these Fudge Sticks for years and that is the first time I have ever got any with 2 sticks in them. But over all these are a good product, and the plant is very clean. We recently came back to go thru again with more of the family as we have made it an annual thing due to the fact of one person we have found does the tours better than most. We enjoy Chad McKeehan giving a tour. He is so very knowledgable about Mayfield's and he is more like Mr. Mayfield. We really look forward to talking to him every year. He is so nice.
I love the SNOW CREAM, but dislike everytime (almost) there is a large air pocket, if it was just a small, occasional pocket I wouldn't complain, The last 6 pints,5 of them have had BIG AIR POCKETS ,a few of them had two air pockets. I am asking for any coupons I just wish you fix this irratating problem. I will continue to purchase this SNow Cream regardless . It is the best! just fix the Air Pocket.
If you are ever in Athens, TN make sure you visit and sample the ice cream from Mayfield Dairy. Don't worry about cost, the tour is FREE. The tour was informative on the beginning and ending of the production of milk products. Make sure you don't forget to purchase an ice cream cone. The ice cream was great. This activity is for all ages.
It was a really neat place to visit. You learn the history of the Mayfield factory. And you can see how milk is put in the contianers. You can see how the Mayfield ice cream is made. The best part is after you take the tour you get big ice cream cone, or cup of ice cream for $1.00. We go just to get ice cream.
