Crazy Horse Memorial
Crazy Horse Memorial, the world's largest sculpture, now in progress, is located just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore. The Memorial includes the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center, the sculptor's studio, as well as a new 40,000 square foot Orientation Center and theaters. Many Native American artists and crafts people create their artwork and visit with guests at the Memorial during the summer season.
After being let down by Mt Rushmore, The Crazy Horse Memorial was a breath of fresh air. The scope, the sorroundings, and the Museum was superb. And chances are they will get the monument done! Unlike Mt Rushmore which stands today uncompleted, and with no plans to finish it. If you go, take the tour of the construction, it's great if you get drawn in by the beauty and scope of what they are trying to do there. Anybody who visits Mt. Rushmore aught to visit Crazy Horse also, and when it's finished, people will be saying, Mt What? I came to see Crazy Horse!
Back in the 60s, My Mother, and I were traveling with relatives from Illinois, and the same day we visited Mount Rushmore, we c=visited the crazy Horse Monument. the sculpure's home was open for tours, and in the home, I saw a grandfather clock that was made where I was working at the time(Herschede-Hall Clock Company) I would really love to see the monument today. ....I regret using "tourist trap", rather I would rather reference "tourist desination". The experience was fun, I would recommend this project to others, and the visit was worth the time and some money. You have to go and witness at least one time....though I have a mixed opinion on the subject.
I truly like the idea of celebrating the Indians famous leaders and the idea to do it without government money. However , i doubt the money raised is being used to further finish the project. It appears making money has taken over the idea of finishing the project. It will be beautiful one day but i question there morals and use of funds. Very expensive to see and shop a gift shop??
I'm not sure what I expected when we visited the memorial and museum. The sculpture is what it is. There is a long way to go.
The museum is another matter. This has to be one of the best collections of indian artifacts that I have visited. If your interested in the Lakota Souix or the events leading up to Wounded Knee or Little Big Horn, it is a must. They even have some of the beads traded to the indians for Manhattan island. We had planned to spend an hour or two in the museum. We spent five hours, and would like to visit it again.
We found the memorial to be FANTASTIC. It was $10 dollars a car load and free the next day. Had to pay the $4 extra to get up close. Didn,t mind. The museum was educational and was very beautifully laid out. There was a great gift shop also. The light show at night that was FASCINATING, as well as educational. We enjoyed it very much. Note: If the funds from Crazyhorse were Federally funded it may never be completed as is with Mount Rushmore, and could be used for anything the government decided! This monumental task does'nt work at the speed of a computer, it's physical labor and very time consuming. It is a wonderful achievement to honor our true native of these United States.
I also feel it is a well-deserved idea and memorial. My husband had been here last in 1985 and I had never visited it, but it is definately a place that we plan on coming back to later to see the progress. We can't wait to see it completed! Our family really enjoyed the Museum area, it is well-worth taking the time to stop and appreciate some of the American Indian's culture and history.
