Fort Pitt Museum and Blockhouse
The convergence of three rivers that make up Pittsburgh became a hotly contested site in the 1750s during the French and Indian War. The blockhouse that stands on the site of the ruined Forts Duquesne and Pitt was built in 1764, and is the only portion of the forts left standing. Part of Fort Pitt was reconstructed for a museum and provides an interesting look at life during the 18th Century in an unsettled land.
The exhibits are fantastic! They tell the early story of Pittsburgh in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War and more! The model of Fort Pitt is a great way to see Pittsburgh as it used to be and the exhibits are well done.
The Fort Pitt Museum is bursting with history and engaging displays -- but I find it to be (sadly) one of the most overlooked cultural sites in the city. Perhaps its location isn't convenient to those driving a car (parking costs in downtown Pgh are ridiculously HIGH!) but if you're in the downtown area anyhow-- or a place such as Station Square that's easily accessible to the subway or buses -- then it's worth a trip to this museum situated at the entrance to Point State Park. The region played a major role in the shaping of our country in the 1700's. It was a key site for the French and Indian War, as well as for General Braddock's defeat. And few people are aware that Pittsburgh was one of the first miltary posts for a young George Washington! The Fort Pitt Museum offers information and artifacts on an incredible time period, and the Fort's location at the point of three rivers is of such great military significance that the museum will make you view the topography of Pittsburgh in a new light. Note that the museum is relatively small; it certainly would not take an entire day to experience it, but the time that you will spend there is interesting and worthwhile. As a bonus, the local Entertainment Books offer BOGO admission coupons.
