St. Anthony's Chapel

Description

St. Anthony's Chapel was built as a shrine to St. Anthony of Padua in the 1880s. Father Suitbert Mollinger, a wealthy Belgian priest, provided the funding for the project; unfortunately he died shortly after the shrine was completed. The chapel holds an immense collection of religious artifacts; possibly the largest collection in the western hemisphere. Tours are conducted at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Amazing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/23/08
Originally, I visited the chapel with family many years ago and was amazed with the relics, the statues and the beautiful chapel. I have sent many visitors and all have had the same feelings. I am planning another visit shortly with more visitors and can't wait! I highly recommend visiting the chapel for great spiritual benefits.

Expectations were too high
By Erin, 11/11/07
Amazing history and structure, but my expectations were too high and when I saw it in real life I wasn't as impressed as I thought I was going to be. Not a very impressive exterior and the interior was pretty small. The pictures I saw online seemed to make it appear way bigger than what it actually was.

where do i begin?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/20/07
I always wanted to visit this place. My mother-in-law grew up going to the church that has this chapel. Last year when we were visiting her she took us there and I was really disappointed. Kind of big, dark, and ages of dust and dirt. Many of the relics are just bone chips pinned to a background labeled in abbreviated German. Hard to distinguish what's what. The most impressive thing is the life-sized hand carved and painted Stations of the Cross. Really impressive.

I Lived There
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/7/06
I grew up on Troy Hill in a house facing Most Holy Name Church and around the corner from St. Anthony's Chapel. As a very young child I loved the novenas at the Chapel to St. Anthony, the Saint of miracles, and I still do. As a senior citizen I visit there often. The church and chapel are always on my list to see. If you need a faith pick-me-up, or just a marvelous place to see, I reverently recommend it.

Awesome Holy Place
By harleycharter, 6/16/05
A most fitting resting spot for some great saints. Magnificent artwork with life-sized Stations of the Cross. Hidden treasure. A must see while in Pittsburgh and definitely worth the search.(We probably wouldn't have been able to find it without the very kind assistance of some local people). Not open on all days and we came on a closed day. We were so grateful that parish staff let us in anyway--check the schedule before you plan your trip. No set fee but donation baskets available in the Chapel. Many varied, beautiful reliquaries. The skull of St. Theodore(?) was a bit macabre but it certainly captivated my young son.

Relics Galore
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/8/05
I have to admit that the "relics" aspect of Catholicism (I'm Catholic) has always freaked me out a bit. If you're in that boat, you may want to bypass this site. But in addition to the amazing relic collection, (largest outside of the Vatican)they also have beautiful stations of the cross statues, and a lot of history. This is one of the most hidden places in Pittsburgh, and that's a shame. I think there are a lot of people who miss out on a great experience

Should be an annual trek
By Rock, 4/24/05
This is one of the world's greatest hidden treasures. It is a must see for all. You simply get chills from the collection. Outside of the Vatican, you will never be so close to your religion than you are here.
