I just got back from my trip to Lancaster (for a corgi specvialty show). I had been to Lancaster before and had always admired the Amish Quilts. We were looking around Bird N Hand, and came across this charming shop. It was filled with beautiful handmade quilts, and didnt have that comercial feel that some of the other shops in town had. Allthough it was quite busy, with people looking and purchasing, they took their time with me showing me styles in the twin size. I didnt buy that day, but she wrote down the patterns I liked in case I decided to come back. Two days later I returned and couldnt decide between two. They took both quilts and hung them outside on a clothsline so I could see both patterns in natural light. It reallly helped me to choose and they shipped my choice home. It arrived in great condition four days later, and I am now enjoying my Amish Quilt! I recommend stopping in this quaint shop just to admire the handiwork, even if you dont purchase a quilt. They also have lot's of lower priced items such as pillows and handbags as well.
I went to Pennsylvania May 2008 for Mother's Day. It was my first visit to Pennsylvania. My cousin, by marriage, took us to the Amish town to look at quilts. Sylvia's was the last place we stopped and yes it was a treat. She had the best prices and the nicest looking quilts. I was looking for a king size quilt. She showed me several, but the pattern I wanted was only made in queen size. All of a sudden she said she would be back. I followered her outside and she was in the process of making the same quilt in queen size. She showed me the topper. She explained how she could turn it into a king by adding a dark border to match the colors of the design. I bought it and it is being shipped to me the end of July to August. It was a pleasant experience.

Sylvia has treated my friends and I with such a interest and friendliness that cannot find anywhere!
She remembers you when you come in and seeks to show you what colors, size, and pattern of quilts you desire.
I am having a custom quilt made and look forward to knowing it will be more than I expected!
A must to anyone interested in quilts handmade and not machine sewed.
The experience has left us in awe of what goes into making a quilt!
We stopped at Sylvia and Omar's Quilt Shop and they were the kindest people!!! The quilts were hanging outside in the wind and one more beautiful than the next one. Sylvia was so very helpful with any questions you may have about anything. Omar cut fabric for us with his wonderful sense of humor. They also had another fabric shop on the property with tons of fat quarters, very nice quilt backs, homespun, and solid color cottons. The prices were very good and all the members of the family gave us excellent customer service. We would definitely go there again and we look forward to it too!!!! Thank you for the lovely experience.
My wife spotted the quilts hanging outside Sylvia Petersheim's house, and she insisted we stop. What a delightful surprise. In her basement Sylvia has hundreds of quilts. We shared the experience with two women who were quilt hunting too. Sylvia patiently showed us EVERYTHING. Her prices are stunning. The books said we should be prepared to pay $500+ for a queen sized quilt, but nearly all Sylvia's in that size were $395.00.
She can have quilts made to order in any pattern or design if you request, and apparently for no extra charge. The icing on the cake is her shipping the quilts to Texas for us so we don't have to worry with overloading our suitcases. We got two on this trip, but I am sure we'll be back.

We bought our first quilt from Sylvia in December 2003 and loved it so much that we've gotten others for each of our three guest rooms in the year since then. Every time we've gone into the shop, Sylvia welcomes us and takes the time to show us as many quilts as we want to see and allows us as much time as needed to decide which one is perfect for us. Never rushed and always armed with details about each and every quilt (including a good story or two), Sylvia is a patient woman. We've looked in many other places for quilts, both commercial establishments and small Amish and Mennonite homes, but have never found the quality, service and value we've found at Sylvia Petersheim's.
