My parents took me every year as a kid and now that I am in college I am still going when I visit the coast with friends. There are plenty of things to do. It's all inside and they have this great display where the kids can reach in to touch the sea anenomes and sea stars. It's especially nice to visit when it's raining on the coast. And it's free! (a donation display sits by the front door)
The displays are dense, there is a lot of information which is very relevant to the environment and highly instructive to kids. The Aquarium is mostly display of species and very little natural history (except for the sea-turtles); the Hatfield Center is a lot more comprehensive and very captivating especially to curious minds, young and old.
Highly recommend it.
