Lake Murray State Park
This large park features Lake Murray, a 21,000 acre man-made lake that is popular for water skiing, scuba diving, and fishing. You'll also find a miniature golf course, a nature center, and an airport strip at this park. Lodging facilities are available.
Lake Murray cabins are really old and there is no good lake view from any of the cabins. The boat rental company sucks. It is privately owned with rude staff and horrible service. If you are renting boats or wave runners make sure you have insurance. There is a high chance that you could be charged for scratches.
this was the best place to camp and enjoy water sports, the water was low due to drought. you always need to be careful on water, more so when the water is low. and for all the white trash comments. do you know difference between a red neck and being white trash?? [the red neck owns his trailer] i have been to Lake Murray Ok. many times, some of the greatest americans live and camp in and around Lake Murray Ok. the folks are friendly and very helpful. we leave our travel trailer here at byford storage because we know were we are going to camp every year. the best kept secret of oklahoma. thank you great folks of Lake Murray for so friendly and hospitable
WE LOVE LAKE MURRAY OKLAHOMA
I went to Turner Falls with some family and decided to drive out to Lake Murray to look for ideas for my next camping trip. I was impressed with how clear the water was at Lake Murray however that is about the only thing that i found charming about it. The overall impression of this place was like many beofre me have said = trash, some white trash, and a lack of information on anything fun to do. i would much rather go to Lake Texoma and spend my time and money.
I grew up in this area. In the 60s and 70s it had a certain amount of cool local color aobut it, and then whole county just went flatline. I tneedsa big infusion of money, which will probably never happen. It's beautiful country filled with trashy people. The complaints aobut beer bottles/cans below tipify the mindset of the local residents, and I am glad to live in an area where people take care if what they have. Maybe someday the place will have an awakening, but probably not in my lifetime.
I went to do a day hike and was let down at the state of this park. Now, I didn't stay at the lodge or eat there. I was there only to hike and take pictures. It was pretty but it was also dirty. Beer bottles and cans lined the trails and the lady working the desk at the office didn't seem to know anything about the trails. The trails were in need of attention. Parts were overgrown and other parts washed away. The lake looked good outside of the piles of litter. It was obvious that this hadn't been cleaned in years since there were bottles with labels that hadn't been around in decades. My other complaint is that there were no information signs any place. What is that building? No idea. I know the lake was a resort for the governor at one time but what were the other structures used for? No clue. I went to the tower but was turned away because it is only open a couple of days a week. Bottom line is this park needs desperate help and fast. Please clean up the little, post some signs, mind the trails and people will come! Until that happens I'll be going to Arkansas. Sorry.
Larry Brown, the owner/operator of Lake Murray Watersports refused to refund me my $100 deposit after I unknowingly and accidentally rented a boat from another boat rental provider. I'm from out of town and went to the marina thinking it was the only place to rent boats. Even after mentioning that I was on leave from Iraq and that there was some miscommunication with the people at the marina, he still refused to forego the deposit. Now I'm not saying what he did was illegal, but I am saying that taking $100 from someone when no service was rendered is a very poor business practice and speaks a lot about the kind of person he is. Greedy, inconsiderate, and an overall douche bag. To those of you considering renting boats or visiting "Watersports", please don't! Better yet go to Texoma or some other lake instead.
We just went the weekend of Nov. 14, 2008 and stayed in a king room at the lodge. These rooms need a bad facelift. The park itself is beautiful; the food at the restaurant was good, but the room was comparable to a 3rd rate motel along the road; not a place we'd pick. I see they have huge expansion/new facilities planned. I hope it happens soon, because this is a beautiful park; just needs nicer lodging.
Stayed in one of the cottage with resident rodent. All water sports, mini golf, canoe rentals, pool closed. We did have rain but no storms. This was the 3rd week of August. The day we had excellent weather...still not operational. Would suggest calling resort to see if the amenities are operational. Hard to entertain 3 kids.
Golf course was OK for the 2 golfers. Restaurant at Lodge was good.
The Lake Murray cabins and park is a fantastic place for family vacations, or just a weekend get-away! I started coming here when I was just 13 years old, and we get back every summer, sometimes even in the fall. There is something for everyone: lake for boaters and fishers, horses for the cowboy, bike rentals for the adventurer, boat canoe and paddle boat rentals, pool for the kids (and swimming hole), golf for the golfer! It's just a wonderful place for you and your family (or significant other) to get away from the hustle and buslte of city life.
