Firelands Winery, Sandusky

In the mid-late 1990's I had the experience of living in the Firelands area of north Ohio. I have many good memories of the life and friends in the area. But the experience that had the greatest impact came from what was probably (for me anyway) a once a life time event. Claudio offered a wine making class somewhere around 1998-9 which I attended. Using the knowledge he imparted I have become somewhat of a local celebrity in my home in Florida. Each year friends and family bring fruits for me to work my magic with. And each year about this time I am frequently asked by many friends what I am brewing this year and when it will be ready. Everyone tells me how superior my wine is to other homemade wine and even better that most at the local wineries. Of course, I never fail to mention that I owe it to Claudio Salvador and recommend they visit one of his wineries in n. Ohio if they ever get up to the area. Thank you Mr. Salvador.

Amazing winery! The atmosphere was great and everyone there was so nice. There is a large selection of wines made by their winery, as well as some imports. They also have a wide selection of supplies for ayone wishing to try their hand at wine-making! They offer a self-guided tour that tells about the history of their winery (for free). Honestly I didn't find it very fun, but I'm not into things like that. But for those that are it would probably be nice. There happened to be a craft show there the day we went in the tour rooms, so I found that more fun. They offer wine tasting in the gift shop where you come in. It was only $3 (I overheard someone say it goes up to $5 in the summer?), which is a great price! You get to taste 6 wines- either drys or sweets- which I was told they put out different wines on the list all the time to mix it up. They give you about half a glass (this was my first wine tasting, so I was expecting just a couple sips worth). They also give you the list of wines with a pencil so you can mark the ones you like. And they offer a cheese plate if you'd like one. Wonderful wine! It's very well priced too. We walked out with 3 bottles of wine for $20. You can also order wine from them. We'll most certainly be back!

We love the Winery and we go there off and on quite a bit. Tonight may have changed that for me. The girl that waited on us was one of the rudest people I have ever seen.She wouldn't help us and everytime I ask a question she had a smart answer for us. I walk out, my husband went ahead and bought something. I doult if I ever go back. I am really sorry this happen. I really like your place. Just wanted to let you know, the way bussiness are going you don't want to chase your costumers away. Thanks for listening

They have a large selection of wines that they make. You can experience a casual wine-tasting at the bar in the center of the main room for $2 per person, and you can choose to sample either dry or sweet wines. The wine is very reasonably priced as well. The "tour" is self-guided and includes a looping video giving the history of the area and details of all the steps of wine-making. The video is only about 10 minutes at most. Then you can walk into an area where you can learn about champagne making. They also sell wine-making supplies, including grape juice. The people were very nice there as well. A great activity for a rainy day!

I love the friendly atmosphere. They only charge a $1.00 for wine tasting becuase under Ohio Law they have to. They had wine for everyone and every pallette. The best part is the price. Bottles of wine ranged form $5.00 to $25.00 with the average price being about $7.50 per bottle. Before you leave make sure you buy a cheese and sausage tray to enjoy a bottle in the gazebo.
