Onslow County Public Library
The first public library in Onslow County, this library was established in 1936 and is filled with a wide selection of books, magazines, and reference books plus offers a variety of special programs and activities for children.
The library in Jacksonville is pretty old, situated right in what appears to be Section 8 housing. They have a security guard in place at all times, which is a little disconcerting. The actual section with books is pretty darn small, but if you put a book on hold it generally comes in pretty quickly. Aside from the aging facility in a sketch area, my main complaint is that it is impossible to sit and enjoy reading a book or magazine due to the non-stop chatter of the staff (and the fact that there is no real quiet reading area). They generally are way overstaffed and have numerous people standing around talking- if you approach the desk for help or to checkout, it generally takes a few minutes for them to even acknowledge you, busy as they are with their chit-chatting. The last time I was there trying to read a magazine, I witnessed an older librarian giving the younger ones a dressing-down (loudly and publicly) for standing around talking rather than reshelving books or doing something, anything, that they are paid to do. They need to clean house and rather than pay people to stand around, buy more books. But, I guess that's government efficiency at its best.
The good news is that you can now get books on your e-reader. The bad news is that the selection is sparse and it's impossible to get most new, good books via e-reader due to long wait periods.
Overall, quite disappointing.
The folks at the Swansboro branch of Onslow County's library have always been extremely helpful. They have helped me find the books I wanted both in person and via the telephone. I do find that if I take the time, I can use the internet site and find what I want by myself. Thank you, ed
I have lived in much smaller towns than Jacksonville with larger libraries and better selections! This library is small, has hardly any books to choose from, and is basically good only for renting older movies for cheap.
I like the library because the books are decent and they also have decent movies to rent out.Their late fees are a little high, but they let you renew the books if you call them over the phone. They also provide summer programs for the kids. I like going to the library.
