Gold City Gem Mine
This unique family venue features gem mines, a gold mine, a chairlift that will take visitors on a journey above the clouds to an elevation of one mile at the top of Mount Cowee, a jewelry shop, and a country style general store.
Nothing but a lie! We were told we had prescious and semi-prescious stones. They even seperated them for us. We were told we had rubies, garnets, a sapphire of high quality and emeralds. They were all trash. We were encouraged to have them cut into stones and jewlery. We brought them back to Atlanta and had them certified as trash by a gemologist that works for a company that makes high end jewelry and buys diamonds and jewels from all over the world. I am pissed and highly diasappointed. We were told by the gemologist there, that our finds of three stones after cutting were worth at least #3-5 thousand dollars. Actually worth nothing! Will never go back. Should sue for false advertisement and fraud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This site is good unless an ex subcontractor who worked at Gold City decides to use it as a "get even" review to our company. Craig who wrote the "get even" review below was a subcontractor with little knowledge of Gold City Gem Mine operation. He was terminated for shortages and evicted from all our properties by the legal courts.
I first started working there doing property upkeep. My own business was at a stand still so when the owner asked me to work the flumes I thought why not. Over the past 2 years I have seen WAY too many wrong doings. People being tossed out simply because they mention other "MINES" (because the owner is a conspiracy freak), people being sold FAKE stones on a regular basis, and so on. They NEVER cut ANY stones. They DO NOT have a cutting "FACTORY". They order everything. They pay around $2.00 for a cut sapphire. NOTHING you get in a bucket comes from the property except the dirt itself. They even buy rough rubies and sapphires from a local dealer at 50 cents a pound. It's nothing more than a scam. The silver rings they charge $65 for costs on average $13. There are NO "active" mines on the property. In fact - the only mines that were on the property no longer are owned by Gold City and are not in use. Please don't waste your time or money there.
I've been going here for years with my family and just the other day on the way south through NC 441, I stopped in to see what had changed since I had last been there and slough a few buckets to try my luck as I've had excellent finds there. I do not want to mention too much but when I had asked the owner who was fiddling around the bucket bins I wanted to ask a question and not a word later and I was RUDELY told to "get the ^@!$ out of here". Be very careful not to go to the end of the outside slough, where the buckets are stored. Also as I visibly had pocket less basketball shorts on and a shirt on I can't really see what the big deal was and that glancing at a bucket of dirt could be grounds for kicking me out. I know that all of my friends I've told or 'would' have told up until that point will have a reason to drive right past that tourist trap. I certainly will not be back myself and again nobody should be kicked out for looking at something. I'm giving the atmosphere rating a zero after what happned. Customer appreciation I think not! I felt like i was going to get my behind whooped on for nothing at all.
We found little in our bucket and the bucket was not a cheap bucket. The cutting prices were high, the wait was long to sit down and go over the gems we found. We ended up not getting anything cut. They tried to push us into cutting a particular stone which happened to be the most expensive cut.
