Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Ithaca

I have to say the view of Ithaca from inside of the museum is a must see. But, when I go to a museum I don't like to feel watched, as if I'm a criminal. The all omnipresence of the security for me takes away from the freedom of the art on the walls.

ok: when i was young my attitude for this museum was "BORING!!!! Mom? i wanna go home!!" I recently went back and it was sooooo amazing!!!!! IT WAS AWESOME!!!! I think its an awesome museum but they need more things for young kids. like an activity room?

It's hard to believe the building was erected in 1973. Any city of half-a-million would kill to have a gallery like this, and the siting is exceptional. I love IM Pei anyway - but enough about the architecture. Inside is a terrific collection - eclectic, to be sure, but, like the New York Times encourages reading about subjects that don't immediately grab your attention, the Johnson Museum of Art is like that. Asian pottery, for instance. AND! They're building a new wing on the north side of the building to showcase their burgeoning collections! There's something about this building, and its contents - a spirit that you'll feel as you approach the building. By far the finest structure at Cornell, imo.

This is beautiful building situated on the western edge of the Cornell Arts Quad. The Cornell students affectionately call the museum "the sewing machine" because of it's unique cut out shape. From inside, you can get lovely views of Ithaca and Cayuga lake while you admire the artwork. The museum is intimate and has a very impressive permanent collection of far eastern art as well as interesting exhibits from time to time.
