War Memorial Theatre
The Patriot Theater at the War Memorial is widely recognized for both its grand architectural design and its reputation for hosting a splendid array of concert and theatrical events; the theater seats over eighteen hundred guests and is a fantastic venue to enjoy live music and theatre, as well as serving as host to business conferences and large meetings.
In the years following World War One, cities across the United States built memorials commemorating those who had sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom. Some communities erected statues and sculptures. Some hung bronze plaques in the town square. Others built parks. In Trenton, they had a different idea.
In Trenton, they envisioned a magnificent building made of marble and granite - the size of a city block - to serve as a great community center. The building would contain spaces for assemblies, receptions, meetings, and other public events.
The heart of the building would be a magnificent concert hall, as great as any in the world at that time. They envisioned that the greatest performers in the world would come to Trenton to perform on its stage.
They imagined that the performances that would take place in this concert hall would enrich the lives of the people in the community and educate generations of children. And all of these performances would serve as a living memorial to those who had sacrificed their lives.
In 1932, this vision became a reality. Today it is called Patriots Theater. Over the past 75 years, some of the worlds greatest artists and performers have appeared on its stage.
In 1998, the State of New Jersey spent $42 million restroing the theater to its original splendor, making it one of the premiere historic concert halls in the nation.
The 75th Anniversary of the War Memorial's opening is January 19, 2007. It's definitely worth a trip to Trenton just to go and see a performance at this splendid facility. There are symphony concerts, jazz concerts, operas, ballets, comedy shows, pops concerts, children's shows and all sorts of special events throughout the year. And when you go, please take a look around at the magnificent architecture and remember why this extraordinary building was built.
