My husband and I went to Vicksburg for the weekend and thought we would enjoy a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River. What a joke! Not worth $20.00 per person. The boat did not travel far at all and maybe five minutes of narrated history of Vicksburg. Plus the add for the Sweet Olived boasted it was air conditioned. No AC! It was very HOT on that boat. No working restroom either it was out of order.
Did Not get to take the tour...was in Vicksburg for 2 days and both days the Sweet Olive didn't tour -- was told they had to have a minimum of 15 adults and only had 8 signed up.
May want to call in advance ... this was one of the main things we wanted to do in Vicksburg and weren't able to.
We went on the boat ride during a real nice sunset..It was great...It is neat seeing vicksburg from the Water....Got to see some huge barges out there....We actually got hung up on a sand-bar for a few minutes which made the ride even more Exciting!..The Skipper knew just what he was doing to get off of it...Very Professional Crew...The First Mate told a lot of interesting history about the river & Vicksburg...Well worth the money...
MY wife and I took a ride on the "Sweet Olive" and came away very impressed. The crew and staff of the boat were first class, very warm and courteous. It was a great way to learn about the history of the city and river. I for one very much appreciated the history lesson, and can definetly tell that the crew were proud of the city's past. A must "do" if you want to gain a different perspective on the history of the city that you could not get from land.
The trip on the Sweet Olive was nice and the crew was nice and very accomodating. I would recommend it to others but if you are not a true fan of the Southern stance in the Civil War it may be difficult to listen to the captain's history lesson at times. So be prepared... He was a nice Southern gentleman and this was the only negative about the trip.
If your traveling to beutiful Vicksburg Mississippi, stop down on the river front and give the "Sweet Olive" a ride. Jim Jones and his family are a fine example of Mississippi hospiality. The tour itself is magnificant and breath-taking. Captain Schaeffer gives an account of the history of the river as you ride. There is an abundance of wildlife and plants indeginous to the area that will captivate your eye. They serve refreshments and cold drinks to wet your appetite. I traveled that way from Baltimore. I stayed at one of the many wonderful antebellum homes in the area and was pleased to stumble upon the "Sweet Olive". If your traveling to the area, this should be one of your first stops.
