The "scenic" train ride to Two Harbors consisted of a small train car with no ventalation and no leg room. The view consisted of three small glimpses of the lake, three stops on bridges to look at random rivers, people's backyards, and lots of trees. The view was mostly just trees.
They do not tell you they stop to pick up more passengers along the way from a resort.
Outside Two Harbors we were stopped in the train yard for over an hour while another train unloaded its cargo. They would not let us off the train and they could not move. Although they seemed to believe this was "normal" and not their fault, it was not something they told us was a possibilty. When we first stopped they told us it would be 10 minutes. Over an hour later, they had not given us any additional updates or alternatives.
While the train had excellent views of Lake Superior, didn't quite live up to our expectations. We had reservations on the elegant dinner train. the web site said all meals included dessert-ours did not. the car was not anywhere near what it looked like in the web site-more like the diner train than the "elegant dinner train". if you are celebrating a special event save your money and do something else. maybe the train without dinner or something.
We took the steam engine to Two Harbors. The view was beautiful. They had shuttle buses waiting for us when we arrived in Two Harbors because we only had a 2 hour layover. The shuttles were free and would take you anywhere. Be sure and stop at the 3M museum. It may sound kind of boring but, Two Harbors is where 3M started and it was very interesting. The train ride back was even better because we had a wonderful desert from The Lighthouse Restaurant. Half way through our trip up they passed out a desert menu from The Lighthouse restaurant so you can place an order. On the way back the train stops near The Lighthouse and they pick up our deserts. It was very unique. I'd recommend this train ride. It was a lot of fun and well worth the money.
