If you want to treat yourself, take a walk "on the wild side" of Broadway and experience Kay Yourist's ceramics studio. You will enter a sunny and open gallery which showcases Kay's unique and sophisticated artistic style of ceramic work. In addition Kay features pieces created by an array of local artists. Whether you are searching for that special gift, are interested in ceramics classes or you just want to take a gander, this is the place.
The ceramics studio was busy with working artists and students of all levels coming and going. The bright gallery had functional and sculptural ceramics, jewelery, photographs and paintings. The open atmosphere was low-key and the welcome upon entering was genuinely warm and helpful. Potters can purchase tools and clay here, and kiln space if using Kay's clay. This is an Ann Arbor site not to be missed by visitors and locals alike. One of the unique spots to find in Ann Arbor in the expanding "Lower Town."
This is 40% eclectic gallery and 60% working studio so you can browse the sculpture, photography, jewelry and pottery from a coop of local artists or you can watch students creating their next clay masterpiece on the wheel.
Their classes are great. I started as a complete novice and can now make lovely functional pieces. It's a really supportive and warm environment and the owner, Kay is a gem.
The other bonus is it's proximity to Foods of India so I can pick up a samosa and some mango juice before I browse.
Kay Yourist is a terrific ceramic artist and she also sells work from other local artists.
Not your run of the mill heavy pottery mugs and bowls - there are unique functional pieces and sculptures. Reasonable prices, too. We buy interesting gifts here regularly.
Studio space for potters and classes for all ages in a really nice environment with experienced teachers. Good selection of tools for potters, as well. Can't recommend it highly enough.
This studio space is well laid out and spacious. full of light and colors that really feel inviting and that the creative experience is really happening here. Knowledgeable artistry with a mix of traditional and imaginative.
I traveled to Yourist Studio from Toledo and found our journey well worth the trip. The gallery is filled with beautiful handmade pottery that is functional. It also exhibits nonfunctional, sculpural works. If you are more interested in making pots, Yourist Studio offers classes, workshops and community studio. It also has all kinds of pottery making tools for sale. This place has a great atmosphere and friendly helpful people to answer your questions. I can't wait to go back.
