Description

Open yearly from the first of May through October 31st, this impressive Classical Revival home was built as the country home of Edith Wharton, the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The Mount, reminiscent of an English estate with a French courtyard and Italianate terraces, features 35 extraordinary rooms and now houses a cultural and educational center that focuses on the achievement of women and offers a lecture series in July and August. Self-guided tours are available at this National Historic Landmark.

Meet Edith Wharton
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/7/08
By visiting the house and gardens that Wharton designed, a visitor can gain a much deeper understanding of this complex and intelligent writer. And even if you don't give a hoot about her, the property is absolutely lovely. It also makes an interesting contrast with the Victorian-style mansions in the area. Wharton's design shows a great leap forward to the cleaner, brighter, crisper decors of the later 20th c. We spent 4 hours there, including our picnic lunch on the huge verandah.

See it while you can
By RobV, 8/31/08
The Mount gives a full appreciation of Edit Wharton, her writing, her theories on decorating and gardening design, as well as a general appreciation of the whole "gilded age" in America. Its financial troubles have made headlines, but don't let those difficulties distract you from the inherent beauty of the estate and its grounds. See it while you can!
