What is wrong with this pitcure?
By Old Navy Salt, 5/8/11
There is no denying that this statue represents what Gloucester is all about. But any Navy man or anyone with knowledge of ships and boats realizes that there is a mistake in this sculpture by Leonard Craske. It almost stopped the dedication back in 1925 by a group that noticed the mistake. If you look at the statue the man is facing the back of the ship. Because the artist wanted the wheel to be prominent he placed it in front of the wheelhouse post. Still it is a magnificent piece of artwork that represents the seaport properly - but now you know that the man is facing backwards!

A Must See
By Bea, 6/9/08
This is the single statue that most people equate with Gloucester, MA. To get to this statue there is a beautiful walk along a paved walking road that is aligned with American flags and overlooks the harbour. The road has lots of tourists and natives alike, but it all adds to the ambiance of the town. On the other side of the street there is many shops, and icrecream parlors. I highly recommend you view this statue at sunset, also surrounding the statue our plaques dedicated to the 5,000 men of Gloucester who died out at sea. These plaques include their names and the years they died.

A Must

You can't say you've been to Gloucester if you haven't taken the time to visit the statue honoring "They that go down to the sea in ships." It's free and it's the heart of this community. Check the names of those men lost and you'll see the names of the men Gloucester lost in "The Perfect Storm" (made famous by the movie). We love to venture there on July 3 when the harbor lights up with fireworks. Another good stop not far from the statue...STage Fort Park. Also free

Refreshing Seaside Trip
By Ms. Smarty Pants, 5/29/07
Gloucester is a great day trip, but if you're a city person, plan to spend most of your trip in Boston. Just don't stay at the Cambridge Hampton Inn. Uggh!

No trip is complete without it.
By NyleL, 8/21/06
A trip to Gloucester wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Man at the Wheel Statue. The view from this Vista is beautiful with the Annisquam River mouth(technically a salt water estuary) and outer Gloucester harbor area. It certainly brings home the difficult lives that Men of the Sea have to visit such a wondeful tribute to those gone to the Fiddler's Green. My little 2 year old son loved the Statue and kept asking to go to see the 'Man by the sea'. and didn't want to leave the spot. He loved the view of the Ocean, boats, sea life, etc.

It is worth the drive!!!
By JENNY GIRL, 7/26/06
The woman at the wheel (me) had a bit of trouble locating the man at the wheel (if you are coming from the main highway...drive into the "wharf" area and make a RIGHT...not a left!). They have signs marking where it is...up to a certain point and then you are left in a lurch. It was WELL worth it. The man overlooks a beautiful seaport with a moving tribute to all those lost at sea surrounding him.
