Schifferstadt Architectural Museum
The oldest building in Frederick and one of the best examples of German-Colonial architecture in the country, this large sandstone home features an unusual "wishbone" divided chimney. Guided tours of the manor house and gardens are available.
Design of home was well planned for that era. Thick, stone walls keep it cool in summer, warm in winter. Especially enjoyed the stone, kitchen sink which drained outside. The basement plan for the storage of food, both from the garden and for the cured meat. The cottage garden located out the back door made it easy for the cook to bring in herbs, salad items, etc. When my grandchildren are a few years older, I hope to take them to see Schifferstadt.
This is a gem of a house! The architecture can show the history of masonry. It leaves you wondering whether it came from Swiss or German influence. An educational beauty. Also, the garden is incredible!
