A HIDDEN TREASURE BACK IN TIME! I WILL RETURN!
By Sj, 6/2/09
I have been studying the civil war and history regarding the on going tension between the North and South over money and business and slavery building up to the civil war.I wanted to look first hand at plantations and the grounds to get a idea of what it would have been like to be a plantation owner dealing with all the demands of running a plantation of great size and to get a idea of the hard steps of a slave living in the slave house whose life was built around hard labor and the cotton or sugar harvest. I visited and spent much time at many of the plantations in the South and Greenwood was the very best one to me. Greenwood had a welcoming and wonderful staff and I found it a act of love that the owner has spent his entire life as his father before him restoring this plantation and opening it up to the public with a B&B. The owner even living on the grounds. The plantation is beautiful and the history rich. A relative to a former slave family is still living around the plantation land and a relative of the family who built the plantation across the street at the older plantation home (now private) remains also. The food is wonderful and the price is very afforable for a nights stay. I will tell anyone wanting to stay or visit a southern plantation to choose the Greenwood.Being a history geek,I must jump in on the above comment on slavery and agree with the reply given to that comment but also add a history fact, something many are unaware of without study,Only 7 percent of plantation owners even owned slaves in the South the rest being family and paid labor or share choppers worked the plantations. Now 2% of freed black men owned plantations in the South and they also sold and owned black slaves and Native American slaves as the white plantation owners did at that time. Native America's were higher on the ranks as sold slaves then the Africa's in plantation country and had been slaves long before Africa's were brought to America on ships. The ones put in charge of the work groups of slaves on these southern plantations that gave the beatings and punishments of horror and reported to the master were always other black male slaves put in charge of the entire group of slaves. Most all white plantation owners were away from the plantations most of the year and choose other slaves or even freed blacks as paid overseers.Greenwood is a very good place to get a real feel for this time in history and reflex on that era.

Correcting History...reply
By violet, 5/30/09
I found Greenwood Plantation by far to be the best tour and most detailed history it's a beyond a beautiful Plantation of all I have seen so far in the South! The rooms and people are above standards! The owner a very nice man! as for the above statement about the slaves and 1 star! Sadly, slavery is a big part of our America history as most (all countries) have had some form of slavery as a alful part of their own cultures. The Native Americans had their entire culture and land just wiped out by our fore fathers starting this nation and our Asian america's were put into prison camps here in America losing everything they knew and owned as did the jews in Germany during the War. Women have had to fight for the right to vote and fight not to belong (like property) to their husbands in our nations past and child labor laws now protect our children from abusive labor.Plantations are such a important part of both white and black people's history! Many black people do work at these different plantations and give tours and have very deep stories to share also! They have a personal history and even blood relation to the former plantation owners and slaves once living at the plantations long ago. Many black people have told me that most of the slaves remained on the plantations after the war even thou they were freed and not all were happy to leave the life the knew! Yes, as wrong and cruel as slavery was for any person to own anothers persons freedom is beyond reason!... The slaves own desendants will tell you that not all slaves were abused and mistreated...some living way up to their 90s! The slaves desendants some even doing tours have said that many slaves were intrusted in raising the white owners own children, caring for the sick family members and midwifes! some slaves were even left land when the owner died. there are many decendants of the slaves still living in are around the plantations today! all these people now come together to tell a deep story of our Southern history with the good the bad and the ugly! and visiting these old plantations can make you feel and see the mass amount of hard work and time and pure talent put into these grounds. History not being told or just forgotten will be repeated itself in time! Visiting the old war battle grounds or the old Native American camp grounds by the rivers, or seeing and learning about life in the war camps that held our asian americans or the old sweat shop factories up north that worked women and children to death! while the owners build their own grand mansions! these are all important stories to be told and to rember and pass on to our children to ensure time does not repeat the same mistakes! You are in for a amazing trip back into time as the glory and the suffering of the Old South with the blood lines of all colors and cultures mix together for a short time in history that will soon be gone in a wink of a eye when the civil war comes changes the South forever! Go Back In Time go tour and stay at Greenwood Plantation in Louisiana!

BEAUTIFUL!
By Cheryl, 8/19/07
Just walking the grounds of this place is amazing. The currant owner told the story of the Burrow family in a way that you envisioned it. It was like stepping back in time!

Seclusion
By Neveragain, 7/2/07
If you're looking for a quiet weekend getaway, this is the place. Though it's a little off the beaten path, it's well worth the trip. The guest cottages offer a view of the plantation house that you'll see only on postcards. The rooms are clean, spacious, and period decorated. The key word here is seclusion. It's so peaceful and quiet that it's like going back in time. If sitting on a porch rocker watching the hummingbirds at their feeders, or swinging on a swing hanging from a huge oak near the plantation house, or just walking the spacious grounds sounds appealing to you, then this is the place to go. You won't be sorry. You also won't want to leave.

Delightful Stay!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/26/07
LOVED IT!!! We stayed at the bed-and-breakfast and it was the nicest stay of our trip. The rooms are across a pond from the plantation home. They're new, nice, large, and extremely comfortable. Breakfast in the dining room was great. Will definately be back to stay here again. It was truly a wonderful, comfortable stay. It was nice to be able to walk around the grounds in the evening and sit in the rocking chairs on the front porch. Can't say enough good things about Greenwood. Everyone there is super nice and we were made to feel so welcome.

Beautiful Place!
By Kelly, 2/4/07
It looked and sounded good on the brochure and on the internet.....and.... it did not disappoint. The scene from the front porch of the bed and breakfast room was gorgeous! It looked over the reflecting pond onto the house. The rooms were well furnished and nice. The overseers were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and the house was beautiful! You won't be disappointed!

Loved It
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/9/06
The plantation was nice, the tour was good, but the bed and breakfast was great. You had the "bed & breakfast" feel, with motel privacy. The folks who run the place were as nice and helpful as you could ask for. And breakfast was a "real" breakfast, and you are sure to be full when you're finished. The whole experience was well worth every dollar paid.

THIS IS MY IDEA OF FAIRYTALE PLANTATION
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/15/06
I LOVED THE TOUR OF THE HOUSE THE VERY BEST, THE OWNER WHO HAS LIVED THEIR MOST OF HIS LIFE IS THE NICEST PERSON I'VE EVER MET. HE WAS SO HELPFUL EVEN GIVING US DIRECTIONS TO SOME SCENIC VIEWS NO ONE ELSE KNOWS OF. BUT IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP INSIDE A PLANTATION THIS ONE IS NOT FOR YOU. ALTHOUGH IT HAD A VERY NICE HOTEL LIKE PLACE TO STAY BEHIND IT. COMPLETE WITH A BREAKFAST IN THE LOBBY. WHICH IS SERVED TO YOU. NOT BUFFET STYLE. I REALLY ENJOYED KNOWING A MOVIE HAD BEEN FILMED THERE ALSO.
