I used to work at Olde Tyme, and it's dirty and disgusting! There are bugs behind the counters, flies touching food, food touching the floor, which is soaked with tomato juice, gravy, mayo, dirty bread, and other filthy stuff.
The food is good, so as long as you aren't concerned with food safety, you'll be alright.
I now live in Southern California, but being a Lafayette native, there are two things I often daydream about...Pizza Village's Dupe Special and Old Tyme Grocery's shrimp po-boy! God, I miss them! There isn't a better shrimp po-boy...not even in New Orleans (and I love New Orleans).
Yes, the service is rushed, but what do you expect? They have a huge demand to fill during the lunch rush and they are trying their best to get you your food as soon as they can.
If you are in the Lafayette area, you must stop in and get a po-boy!
Old Tyme has been a tradition for years around this area. I have been eating there since my freshman year in college. The food is always stellar (when your order is right) but the service leaves one thinking that their employees would rather be anywhere but there.
The restaurant is usually clean before 11:30 am, but after that its touch and go. They offer the best variety of chips and drinks to go with your sandwich and make the best shrimp po-boy in town. Our family will never throw Old Tyme over, but they could use some customer service skills to say the least.
Shrimp poboys are simply the best...but do try the crawfish poboys too sometime (guess they have them on Tuesdays in the season). They say it's the best poboy outside of New Orleans...it's even better!! :) I wish I had more money to eat there more often when I was a student at UL. Miss those days and food.. :)
I have lived many places. I have eaten a lot of food. Olde Tyme Grocery is the best in poboys or subs. You get what you pay for and more. The service is rushed - They need more staff but then they would have go get a larger place. So they are fine the way they are. Love them. My favorites are shrimp, oyster and catfish on Fridays.
