Enjoyed the soup, salad, and bread. Full by the time we got our entrees but they were very good and large portions the food was very flavorful; had it for lunch the next day! The chicken piccata was amazing. My wife had the Chilean sea bass which was very tender and flakey. Had dinner here this week upon recommendation from a shop owner we’re glad we went.
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful bottle of La Crema pinot noir over a great steak and jumbo crab stuffed prawns. Our dinner bill was over $100 with tip but the food and the service were both wonderful. Great spot for special events. Looking into their catering menu for our wedding.
After reading about this restaurant online we just had to try it for ourselves. The food was outstanding - you can defiantly tell that they make their sauces from scratch. Our server Bridget was very pleasant and was able to make recommendations from the dinner menu. The wine menu is very good – the staff is not only able to make recommendations but also knows how to open a wine bottle and properly decant it. The dinner entrees are all above $25 but they are worth the money because you get tons of food and soup, salad, and bread is included with each entrée.
In general it is a great restaurant one of the few in the area that offer the full package; service, food, and ambiance. Next time I would call ahead to make reservations to avoid the half hour that we waited for a table but Fried Green Tomatoes is defiantly a must stop if you are in Galena or even Dubuque, Iowa.
The food was overpriced and not very good. Bland. Boring. Service was slow and the staff was unattentive. Try Perry Street Brasserie if you want a fine dining experience in Galena that is worth the money.
We made reservations while shopping in Galena during the day. The staff was wonderful and the Fried Green Tomatoes are wonderful and their steaks are out of this world. Don’t forget to save room for dessert they make many of them themselves.
My family and I had always loved FGT, but had only visited the former lcoation outside of town. We were totally surprised to learn that there are no high chairs or booster seats provided. Very disappointing for anyone who actually has the audacity to have a family.
One of my favorite places to eat in Galena is gone. The service was bad, the food unimpressive, the decor lacking.
I'm not sure why they moved from the old building to this one but it lacks the charm of the old building.
I have been eating at FGT for over 10 years and ignored the reviews I read here because I just knew they couldn't be right, I was wrong. After eating in this restuarant for over 10 years I will never go there again.
Not worth the effort or the money.
We went to Galena for a romantic weekend and enjoyed the entire experience. Fried Green Tomatoes had been recommended and we were happy not to wait for a table on Saturday at lunch. The food was good -- except the fried green tomatoes which had so much cheese and sauce that you couldn't taste the "main" ingredient. The sound system played the same five songs in an endless loop -- you can only hear "New York, New York" so many times in one sitting. The iced tea was from the fountain -- something hard to believe in a restaurant with so much hype. Our waiter had no knowledge of the menu. When asked what type of salmon was in the special of the day he had no idea what we were asking. When asked if a particular signature entree was good he said he didn't know. When asked if a salad that came with my meal had dressing on it he didn't know that either. He did return with a vial of their siganture dressing and the reply that the salad isn't normally served dressed but ....
We did enjoy the food and the atmosphere was nice even though the plates had a Mexican flair instead of the Italian. Too many hiccups to justify a return trip.
After being told that it was a 1 1/2 hour wait for a table, we sat at the bar to dine.
The bartenders were great, as were the drinks, although a bit overpriced. The food was mediocre at best, my crab cakes undercooked and luke warm. Other three diners had same complaints. Very slow service (50 minutes to receive the entre)The fried green tomatoes were awful. Ended up getting the entire meal at no charge. Sent food back, didn't eat what was not sent back.
I just don't get it! This place bills itself as a great restaurant but I found the food and service to be sorely lacking.
Friends from Europe wanted to go to a "fancy" place to treat us and had read of this place on line.
The staff acts as if they believe the hype. The signature dish, FGT, is one of the most disappointing on the menu- Soggy and no big whoop. Overall, a poor experience with nothing special to eat. OK if you escape with an average check, but this place sticks you for big dough for mediocre service and food.
