Rock Springs Center for Environmental Discovery, Decatur

This nature center actually ranks with bigger facilities in larger cities (unlike the zoo or children's museum). It has been greatly expanded since the last time I was there when I was in grade school (15-20 years ago). As a native of Decatur who's lived in a larger city for the past several years, I was surprised at the educational value of what was here. There are several discovery rooms, some with nature as a theme - but there was also a room devoted to ancient peoples of the area. There's a wildlife observation area where in a 30 minute period we saw deer and several varieties of birds. We also watched an enjoyable film. There are hiking trails throughout the grounds along with a nice bike trail that connects with Fairview Park. We ran out of time so were unable to see what else was offered. You could easily devote a full day to this venue. Great for adults and children of ages 2 or 3 and up!
