Scovil Zoo has and continues to be an extremely boring zoo. They claim to have over 400 animals but I would sure like to know where..They have common animals that you could see just walking through a park. The train offers very little entertainment for any age. Throw a little extra money in and drive to STL Zoo instead :)
Skovill Zoo is a wonderful zoo that will make anice afternoon for your family. Over the years the Zoo has added and grown and just keeps getting better. Great staff and the zoo is maintained and animals loved and well taken care of. A bright spot for Decatur and a great place to visit.
Scovill Zoo and the children's museum are well worth the trip. They are both very clean, and have a helpful and caring staff. The zoo has a free day each week and both places have great websites. Lots of fun for the day. It is not too overwhelming for the younger kids but interesting enough for the older ones. It makes for a relaxing, enjoyable day. Luckily we live 1/2 hour a way so we buy a membership to both each year. This way we can go for an hour every so often and the kids look forward to it so much...so do I.
our family enjoyed it. i have 2 little girls who are into animals so it was great for them. on a tight budget being a single mother and on unemployment, it seem like disney world. i appreciated the price that it was appealing and had a little extra for a snack. when money and transportation get better, we will certainly be back.
I was afraid when I took my children to Scovill, that it wouldn't be the same experience as when I was a child. That perhaps though my eyes, when I was a child, that it just SEEMED great.
NOPE, It's incredible. Not overwhelming, but can take you whole afternoon. Nice nostalgic train ride. Yogi is gone, but there is a talking parrot there. Fewer monkeys, but one of the best herpetariums I've ever visited!! LOVED the tortoises!!
The wooden castle is incredible as well!!! And they still have the Lion's mouth that you put your head in, to get to the water fountain!!!
Well worth the time and money. I'm SO glad we went back.
I hacve recently traveled to decatur and i took my kids to the the scovill zoo and the childrens musaem. they had a blast. I have been there before when i was a kid and i loved it when i went back. Also if you are looking for a fast fun place to eat visit taco bell on Pershing road.. they have a nice and freindly staff.. an excellent inviroment equals good service.
It is a nice children's zoo and good for a family checking out Decatur. It's no San Diego Zoo, but it has monkeys, parrots, flamingos, cheetahs, and many other exotic animals and a pleseant train ride. Two thumbs up.
We take our three children several times a year. What is even better is the hands on Children Museum located right next door. Only $3.50 per adult for the museum. A wonderful way to spend the day with your family!
