Akaka Falls State Park, Hilo

Rain forest and waterfall, breathtaking and amazing

Beautiful hike that take you through lush rain forests in a circular path. It is just challenging enough to take 4-year kids.

if you have any type of mobility impairment and need to use a walker or wheelchair, etc. forget Akaka Falls. It's all stairs and there is not place you can see the falls from the parking area.

Good news is that it's a really Tall waterfall that's easy to get to - just a pleasant paved stroll through nice jungle, no real hiking required, great photo ops. However, be prepared, it's no Niagara, and there's usually a tour bus or two there.

Akaka Falls lets you see what the island of Hawaii must have been like before all the tourists and houlies came in and messed the island up. One of the most beautiful falls in the State at 440 feet high, is an awesome sight, but the true beauty of this park is the rain forest that you walk through to see the falls. Kahuna Falls can also be seen, but Akaka is the star of this park. All sorts of tropical flowers bloom year round here and will keep your camera bug busy while you enjoy the quiet.

Had to take a trip to the falls. The short hike to the top of the falls is a must for any hiker. I will take any visiting guests to the falls as one of a must see place.

Its a bit off the main highway, but worth the time to go to. Parking is a little to be desired, but if you can't find a spot, just wait and in 15 to 30 minutes a space will open up. The park has no admission fees. The hike is moderate, and not for very little children, eldery or wheelcahirs. But easy enough to do in about 1/2 to 1 hours round trip. The plants are great to see, and the falls are super. Bring your camera!

The walk to the falls is really nice and easy. The falls are gorgeous! They were out of toilet paper in the porta-potty though :-(

This has a breath-taking view. Would rate it as a must view on the Big Island. a short well treaded hike to the point for a fabulous photo-op. Spend a few minutes to savor. There are no facilities in the vicinity, though we saw some construction activity. So get some water, food before starting this trip.
