St. Simons Island Lighthouse

Description

First constructed in 1807 by James Gould on Couper's Point, this towering, 104 foot lighthouse was reconstructed in 1872 on the same site to replace the original which was destroyed by retreating Confederate forces in 1862. A beautifully restored 1872 lighthouse keeper's home complements the lighthouse.

Can't wait to go back!!

My family and I visited the lighthouse while on vacation. I love anything historical and I love Lighthouses so this was a great place for us to go. The employees were wonderful and very helpful and ready to answer any questions. You shouldn't pass up seeing the Lighthouse and museum if you visit the island.

WOW

WOW is the only word I can think of to explain. My family was there for 5 nights and didn't get to do everything we wanted to do. The lighthouse is awesome. The view is outstanding. St Simons has this hometown feel about it right away. The huge trees are breathe taking. Go and see for your self. The beaches are uncrowded and clean.

St. Simons Island Lighthouse is a great experience for everyone!

My husband and I visited the lighthouse during our trip to St. Simons Island last year, and we both thought it was fascinating and marvelous! There's a little gift shop for those of us who like to get a guidebook or postcards from places we've visited, and there are many displays that depict and explain the history of the lighthouse. The view from the top is magnificent and great for taking pictures. I must-see if you're in the area!

Tallest thing on the island

St. Simons has a requirement (much to the disdain of developers) that nothing on the island be taller than the lighthouse. Because of this, St. Simons has retained its character and has not become a place filled endless miles of high-rise condos. The lighthouse itself is a gem. The keeper quarters have been nicely restored to show what it was like to live there (now it is automated). And the views from the top are amazing. This is a perfect thing to do with your middle-aged children. Not to long for their attention spans.
