John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, The
Experience the legacy of John Ringling at this 66 acre estate of one of the greatest business tycoons of his day. The museum is recognized as the state art museum of Florida and includes 21 galleries of internationally recognized European and American art. The estate also includes the Circus Museum, the Rose Garden, the Original Asolo theater, and the beautifully restored 32 room Ringling mansion, all overlooking Sarasota Bay.
What a wonderful experience it was to tour the Ringling Mansion! We took the special privite tour first, lead by a guide who shared her knowledge and history of the Ringling family and their home so well, seeing and hearing about each of the rooms enriched our experience.
The second tour of the mansion was lead by another well spoken docent, this tour was very informative and enjoyable, we saw the main rooms of the home and were treated to hearing the delightful stories about each room.
It was well worth the extra money to take these tours, especially the privite rooms tour!!!
Every year it is an honor to go to Sarasota for our family vacation. We always go the the Ringling Museum and of the course the beautiful house. In fact, I always set aside one day that I can go and just sit by the house and journal. It is so peaceful here and it is as if you step back in time to a slower and less stressful time. If you are visiting the area, be sure to set aside time to visit the house and museum.
I have been twice and I loved it. My husband and I went a few years ago and went back to take our friends. We loved all of the museums- especially the house. Everything is so beautiful. Everyone (especially Floridians) should go see it.
We had a wonderful full day immersed in the glory of the Ringling story. The setting, docents, and Treviso lunch amongst the fountains was offset by the perfect December '07 day.
Visited 10 years ago so we were delgighted to see such a restoration - and noticed more gleaming at every turn especially in Cad d Zan. New buildings too - we'll need to spend more time in the miniature circus exhibit and in the new wing of the museum where will be the Asian Art showing. We'll be back in spring!
Thank you to ALL volunteers!
BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS, STEEPED IN HISTORY AND A ALL AROUND GREAT DAY TRIP !!! BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF ART, AND LOTS OF NEAT FACTS...CLOSE TO OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT SARASOTA AREA HAS TO OFFER, NOT ONLY IS THE MUSEUM WORTH WHILE, BUT WALKING AMONG THE BANYANS IS GREAT TOO....TAKE A PICNIC BASKET, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED !
Don't miss this! The collection includes paintings by Rubens, Titian, El Greco, Valasquez, Tintoretto, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Bassano, di Nardo, Veronese, del Garbo, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Zurbaran, and more. Definitely one of the best collections of mid-1500s to late-1600s European art in North America. Better than most large-city collections from this period. Make sure to see the 11 Rubens paintings if nothing else; no other museum has such a large collection of his paintings, all on display simultaneously.
The museum is great, has the largest collection of Rubens in North America. Mostly his religious works, but gorgeous! Take the docent tour, find out the hidden symbols in the paintings. Lots of other paintings too,and ancient ceramics. The new (2005) Circus model is outstanding, in its own building. The residence, Ca D'zan, is a treat to tour and set right on the bay with spectacular views. Have lunch in the Banyan restaurant amid enormous banyan trees, and browse the rose garden and sculpture court. We had a great day! Also went to a swing band concert with dancing in the garden court, on another evening. Nothing to dislike...they even make it easy to get around the grounds with little trains.
