Stonewood Tavern & Grill
Open nightly for dinner, this elegant fine dining restaurant offers an array of freshly made food such as the finest aged, hand cut steaks, fresh seafood, oak grilled meats, and made-from-scratch soups, all served in a lovely dining room with mahogany wood accented by stacked stone.
I am allergic to many foods and then-
We came back to try one more time. Fantastic. We have been hoping for a fine restaurant where our dietary needs would be tended to. Eureka we found it. Manager Joe asked about special needs, promised and he delivered. Checked all through meal showed honest concerns, chef delivered. Food was prime, cooking superb. Waiter Thomas there and honest and delivered as requested. Needs tended to 100%.
We have a great restaurant we shall use as home base as often as we eat out. Try it and thank Joe & Thomas, and chef. Delightful Stonewood, Decor A1, 36th and Newbury Road. by Samuel J.
Again and Again, I'm told how great this place is. I've been here three times with business and each time the service has been spotty to sub par. And each time I've tried different dishes in hopes of finding something good. Each time the dishes have been average with very uninspired sauces. It's ultimately nothing more then another chilis or bennigan's at a higher price to make you think it's better.
I'd say there are dozens of better restraunts in Gainesville, most at better prices.
Having heard about this grill with good recomendations my wife and I decided to spend our 37th anniversary there. The atmosphere is good and the service great, but past this everything else slides downhill quickly.
They are able to serve beer and make a a very good strawberry dacquiri(my wife liked hers)
The appetizer menu not poor but nothing to write home about. This part of the dinner is more about show than flavor. The crab cakes were tasty but I believe I bought the same ones at Sam Club but I prepare them a little different. The plate was nice to look at when it was served, but then I was there to eat. The grilled shrimp offered was again palatable but fresh would have been better, at least at this time of year. The sauce served with the shrimp was very tasy and I woud not mind having the recipe.
We now move to the main course. Do not order pork or fish as neither are fresh or tasty(unless you like a little pork with your sauce or you are willing to eat frozen flounder(I really don't know what is was but it was not fresh and it was not grouper) while they claim it to be fresh grouper. All the grouper I have ever caught has a meat that has more of a flake to the meat as opposed to a grain meat. There are many fish that are in the grouper family and this grill is not the only one claiming grouper on their menu. Fresh fish whether broiled, fried, or baked is tender and should be able to be sliced with the ease of a hot knife thru melted butter. If you are going to advertise it then deliver it. If it is frozen flounder then call it frozen flounder, if it is frozen snapper then call it frozen snapper I might order it anyway. There is a process called ice glazing that will keep fish fresh for a long period even if for all practical purpose it is frozen. The pork dish was so heavy with their sauce that you could have put chicken under it and would not have known the difference. I did send this fish back and it was then taken off the bill with no problem. I did tell the server up front that if it was not grouper and it was not fresh that it would go back.
We now come to the part where the manager comes to the table with the how dare you question our quality of food(I did not request him and I am there to enjoy a meal not argue with someone who intruded into our evening without a request). The server was able to handle everything quite well and I would have asked to speak to the manager before we left. To this gentlemans credit(I speak clearly and rarely leave room for arugument unless you are to dumb to understand the english language) left our table without further conversation.
We then ordered coffee as is our custom(don't tick off the manager or the chef unless you like strong burned coffee)and I finished mine but I am use to strong coffee but my wife was unable to drink hers.
At this point I give this grille a 2 maybe a 3. We will go back one more time(hey we gotta try the steak and chicken before we write it off). We did walk out not upset just a little sad it did not live up to the hype we had heard.
If our next visit goes well I will refer to this review and if it goes as this visit did I will again refer to this review if they really post it. How can I remember the date you might ask? This was our 37th anniversary and I think after 37 years I got this date down pat.
This is as honest review as you may ever read so take as it is you may have a better time and remember we are going back at least one more time.
I like to give restaurants three tries, just in case.
I gave Stonewood three tries and each time I felt like I was wasting my time and money. The service, regardless what the ambiance and food are like, sets the mood for the restaurant. At larger chain restaurants, I can see bad service and sometimes even tolerate it. Not here. I have NEVER been treated so poorly at an establishment. All three times. On one occasion, I asked for clarification on a menu item and the waitress stopped me, grabbed the menu out of my hands and proceeded to tell the manager about her "unruly" table. I have had nothing but bad experiences at this place and do not reccomend to eating here to anyone I know.
All in all, ambiance and food are generic, food is a bit overpriced, and this restaurant has the honor in my book of being the worst place in Gainesville, FL to have a nice meal.
This place is the place to go. It has an wonderful atmosphere and is family oriented,or can be a great place for a couples night out. The food as well as the drink are all very excellent. Will go again
We've been here a few times, and have always had excellent food and service. (I can especially recommend the smoked salmon appetizer.) The place is clean and has a nice ambiance, allowing you to enjoy your dinner in a nice relaxed atmosphere. Usually it's not as busy as other restaurants (even though you might think otherwise by looking at the parking spots).
I went to Stonewood last night for Valentine's and had such a great meal. The food was incredible (New York Strip). We had an incredible waitress and even though we waited almost 2 1/2 hours to sit because of the holiday, the hostesses and other employees made it an enjoyable, relaxed evening that ran as smooth as it possibly could have. This is definitely an upper scale restaurant that I'd recommend for special occasions!
It was very nice I would suggest the tiger shrimp there to start things off. I couldnt imagine someone finding a cockroach in the food here as one review had said. My wife and I was very pleased and impressed. We even thought that are bill for two would be around $200.00 dollars because the place was so impressive. Turned out we made out with just a $70.00 dollar bill and an incredible experience.
