Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site
Designated a National Historic Site, this authentically reconstructed and interesting trading fort is open throughout the year with the hours changing slightly seasonally. Tours are given on a regular basis, depending on the time of year, so you will want to call to confirm tour times.
We paid full price to get into the fort and come to find out that more than half of it was closed off due to heavy rains prior to our visit. I understand no one can be blamed for the condition of the fort but they could have told us the conditions and let us decide whether or not to pay and go in. I felt cheated afterwards.
Quite a pleasant surprise once I arrive there. The setting is as if nothing had changed at where it have stood since it was built over 150 years ago. I had the vision of Indians on the plain charging toward the Fort and the US Calvary firing their rifles at them while walking toward the entry. An experience to be had for those who seek a more spiritual excursion than the glitzy mountain resort alternative.
A bit off the beaten path, once you get there, it is an enjoyable trip. From the moment you enter the gates, met there by rangers dressed in period costume, to the relaxed atmosphere, you can seemingly imagine yourself strolling through that period of time. The attention to detail, from the 15 minute video, to the self guided tour (or you can go with the guided tour), is well worth the time out of your schedule. There is nothing negative to say about this attraction. Well conceived and carried out, it is a little piece of history each of us should take the time to experience. A must see if you are in the area!!
