I had one of my worst restaurant experiences here which prompted me to leave my worst tip ever. We arrived on time for our reservation and were cheerfully escorted to a nice table. The hostess told us someone will be with us shortly. The menus were on the table, so we picked them up and started reading them. After about ten minutes (the restaurant was almost empty- we had an early reso) our waitress walked up to the table and said, "What would you like?" This bothered me. She should have gone over any specials, offered water, bread, welcomed us... Anything at all would have been nice. We ordered crab cakes as a starter and our entrees. Still no water or bread. Our waitress came out and placed a plate of greens with a couple of croutons on our table without a word. We assumed this was a bed of greens and the crab cakes would follow. We waited maybe 5 minutes and caught her attention. We asked about our order of crab cakes and she nicely pointed at the greens and said that was our order. We felt stupid and said thanks. We then realized that the two small (maybe 3/4-1 inch in diameter) "croutons" were the crab cakes. Everyoone at the table was put off by this and we all said, "Just don't bother putting them on the menu." Our food appeared shortly after and still no water. We ordered a bottle of Seasmoke Pinot and were knocking that back pretty quick as that was the only thing to drink. We asked once more for water and a busser arrived with our glasses of water. The waitress came by and asked if we wanted anything else and I ordered another bottle of wine and we all asked for more water. The wine arrived and we waited for the water. I looked for our waitress and she was leaning up against the back wall on her cellphone. A couple of minutes went by and I looked again and she was still there on her phone, in the dining room. Laughing, carrying on and oblivious. I'd like to point out that throughout the evening, the restaurant was never more than 1/3 full. Anyhow we order dessert and coffee. The coffee was warm, not hot and we could never get anyone to come by the table again except for the bill. Our bill was close to $600 for four. Our entrees were served with corn on the cob. I know most of the bill was the wine, but for the prices they charge I think I'm not being unreasonable in complaining about the self service nature of the place, the use of cheap veggies (corn on the cob) and the complete lack of management in the front of the house. Both of our kids are in Food & Beverage and I'm really tolerant of alot. I understand that most of the time everyone is trying. But not at Cottonwood. I normally leave 20%. On an eveing like this, I'm usually more generous, but I was so frustrated, I left a $20 and walked out without a word. I wanted to call the next day and complain, but before I called the restaurant, I talked to a friend that's a bartender there and he said the management doesn't care, so I saved my breath. The food was OK. If you dine out at nice restaurants, you've had better prepared food. Most of our entrees were overcooked. Mine arrived about 5-10 minutes after everyone else. We live in Truckee and haven't gone back since. We have two friends that now work there and they say nothing has changed. Save your money.
A restaurant with all of those stars should at least serve eatable food. My family and I had the worst meal we have ever had, and we go out often. We went to the Cottonwood on your recommendation. If the restaurant was ever good it was a long time ago in the past. Now it is the worst!

Like all the other reviews, we like everything about this restaurant. Food is great, ambiance is very comfortable and the staff is really pleasant. You can dress up or go in apres ski attire, either way you will fit right in. Enjoy!
My wife and I have enjoyed the Cottonwood on many occasions during the last 10+ years. We have introduced many friends and family members to the Cottonwood, and all have agreed the experience was superb. My wife's aunt and uncle from Fallbrook, California, were our guests last winter when her uncle exclaimed "this was the finest meal I have ever had in a restaurant, in my entire life". Despite his credentials being of the self proclaimed variety, he has very extensive experience dining in finest establishments southern California has to offer, for over 30 years. Our personal favorite time to enjoy the Cottonwood would be in winter, while the snow is falling. Wether it is for a hot beverage and the Hearts of Romain salad in the bar, or a complete multi-course meal from the VERY eclectic menu in the dining room, the warmth and glow of the fireplace inside, contrasted with the view of the historic town below as a backdrop to the uplit snowflakes falling outside, we find the overall experience to be very romantic, and always completely satisfying. From formal evening wear to skier's direct from the nearby resorts, all are welcome and feel comfortable. Highly recommended, don't miss this one if you are in the area.
The food was great, and the scenery even better. I recommend a window table that lets you look out over historic downtown Truckee and the beautiful Truckee River. This is even better when there's snow!
The Cottonwood has great food with an even better wine selection located on a hill above downtown Truckee. Come here for the views -at lunch gaze at the Truckee River below and at night the historic downtown lights up. Especially romantic on winter nights.
