While I may be a bit partial to the place since I live right by it, of all the climbing gyms I've gone to Pacific Edge is my favorite. The top rope and lead walls range from a couple short ones (mostly for beginners) to tall 50+ foot ones which range from 5.7-5.13. The bouldering area is pretty big as well and has everything from VB-V7.
The atmosphere is really good. It is often busy, but rarely crowded (where it is hard to get on something quickly). The staff also is top notch. One thing to note for the beginner's out there, there is a higher concentration of intermediate routes here. There is enough stuff in the 5.6-5.8 and VB-V0 range for a few days of climbing, but if you come more often than a couple times a week you may start to run out of new things to try. However, I never found this to be too big of an issue since you normally progress into some of the intermediate stuff fairly quickly. If not they are pretty good at putting up new routes in a given grade every 2-3 weeks.
Pacific Edge has great walls for climbing - fifty feet and lots of routes (which change often, so there's always something new) Friendly vibe, exercise machines if that's something you like & yoga too.
OK Ok so I'm a newbie - Still I have an elbow...er.. opinion. The gym was humming with activity when I got there, but the staff made me feel like they were waiting for me. They answered all my questions, checked out what I knew, made sure I was safe, made a few intros and told me to have a good time. Although there were quite a few people, there was no shortage of routes. Lots of smiles, helpful people, nice clean gym with more than I've ever seen before in an assortment of climbing experiences, in short, it was a very cool evening, one I hope to replicate whenever I'm in Santa Cruz.
Before you slam my review - remember, it was from a beginner...
