Enjoyed the day

Nice place for a family to go and enjoy a peacefull train ride through the redwood forests! Next door is a state park too where you can walk through the large trees. Next time we are taking the train to Santa Cruz!

Lots of fun

We had a large party of 13, ages 1 to 55 go on the Steam Train ride. It was great! Everyone was impressed with the trees, scenery and ambiance of riding an old steam engine train up into the mountains. The ride takes you up into the mountains past large redwoods to a stop at the top, where you can explore a small redwood grove and take some pics. (The bathroom facilities at the stop at the top were the cleanest we encountered in California - imagine that!) It was the highlight of my father-in-law's trip to California (we also went to SF, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Santa Cruz, Carmel and Monterey). In fact, he loved it so much we dropped him off to ride the train to Santa Cruz beach boardwalk later in our trip. He couldn't stop talking about it! Definitely recommend this site. We also stopped and ate and the Heavenly Cafe (in a nearby town - can't remember the name) and it was good and cheap. This isn't an all day event - so plan something else to do later in the day if you take the morning steam engine tour.

What a time
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/24/05
I went there with a family friend who lived in the San Francisco area. If you are a train buff, this is a must stop. The restored engines are impressive and the ride back to the redwood grotto was highly informative and very interesting.
