After meeting our daughter for lunch in Cambria, she suggested that we visit the sights of the town. She told us she had a surprise for us and so much wanted us to visit this Poor Man's Castle. Don't you mean Hearst Castle? Here's a man after my own heart, I love junk. An awesome sight of great expectations, Nit Witt Ridge is something you need to experience for yourself. An abundance of abalone shells and beer cans is a sight to see. We had a wonderful time touring the grounds and listening to the stories of Michael our tour guide.
We had passed this way several times and always concentrated on the different tours offered at Hearst Castle. This summer we decided instead to see Nitwit Ridge. We injoyed it very much. It is an excellent example of one man's patience and perserverance.
My husband and I saw an ad for Nit Wit Rigde in the local tourist paper while visiting San Simeon. After our Hearst Castle tour, we headed down to Nit Wit Ridge. The tour had just begun, and we joined the family of four and Michael, the guide. The next 45 minutes took us up and around the property... made with beer cans and abalone shells. As we climbed higher and higher, there was a clearing and the most amazing view. Art put a lot of work into this home, and we would highly recommend it to people of all ages.
We were given a great tour by the current owner, Mike, of this unusual site. Mike has talked to many locals and has acquired many stories about Art Beal, the creator of this home and he really brings the old guy to life. Mike has some video of Art from an old tv show that he shows also which gives you a sense of what a character this man was. The property is far larger than you might guess from the street. Our kids (6 & 10) enjoyed the tour as well. We took this tour the day before we went to the Hearst Castle and the contrast was fantastic. Here is what one man did by himself with "junk" - it is a lesson in inventiveness and creativity.
