1819 Weeden House Museum
This five-bay Federal style house is a favorite spot for weddings and receptions. The goal of this museum is to preserve furniture and architecture of the Federal period. It is the birthplace of artist-poet Maria Howard Weeden and contains many of her 19th-century watercolors.
We had our May wedding reception in late afternoon at the Weeden House. It was such a lovely setting inside and out. We had dining tables set under a tent against the back drop of the fragrant spring blooms. The rich history of the house was a perfect place to showcase pictures of our own families' ancestors. The director was so very helpful to us during our planning and the day of, and was a joy to work with. The Weeden family would be proud of her sincere dislply of southern hospitaliy!
Today, my wife and I found a hidden treasure in Huntsville Alabama. We had the pleasure of visiting the Weeden House Museum, and heard about it through some friends from Montana who had been there before. I am truly not into old homes but my wife is and she insisted we had to go just to tell our friends we had been there. Boy, were we surprised and delighted by our tour. Our hostess, Ms. Barbara led us back in time so that when we left we felt like old friends with the Weeden Family. She recited poetry by heart and sang us old songs of the 1800's and we were captivated by her charm and knowledge of Huntsville. This was our first visit to Huntsville and actually to the south and she brought everything to life for us. We were only sad when we had to leave. But you can be sure we will tell others. Our home in Montana has nothing like this and people who do not go to the museum are losing out on a piece of history. I hope Huntsville realizes what a treasure you have, with the charm of the old house, the stories and a feeling of stepping back in time and all with a great hostess. If this is what the South is about, we loved it! Joe & Marily Houseman, Montana
This museum is the highlight of Huntsville visitors! My family and I had the most wonderful time and the best tour we have ever gotten in our travels. We live in Nashville and came down for the fall break and we are so glad. We have museums here but nothing like the fun tour Ms. Barbara gave us. She is a fantastic animated storyteller and kept us laughing the whole time. The place is beautiful and she made it feel magical to us. Thank you Huntsville Alabama for the Weeden House and Ms. Barbara. Sully Robertson and family, Nashville, Tennessee
We came from out of town . The Director, Barbara Scott was fabulous. So nice & wonderful doing the poetry & such a great storyteller. This was one of the best times I had touring a historic site due mainly to Barbara. The info about Howard Weeden was so interesting such a gem that I had never heard about. Definitly visit.
My friends and I are from Jasper, AL and were just driving around when we passed the museum. I love history and could tell this house had lots of it. We stopped only to realize it was close to closing time, but the director invited us in anyway and stayed late just to give us the tour and history of the house. She was amazing and had such a sweet spirit we felt as though we were talking to a friend. She told stories, recited poetry, and even treated us to a song. Absolutly beautiful. We took over a hundred pictures in the house and amazingly caught what appears to be a face in the mirror on one of the antique dressers. We were shocked when we discovered it and of course emailed it to Mrs.Scott the director and she is now sharing it at the house. We can't wait to go back to visit with Mrs.Scott again and of course try to capture another ghost on film! I strongly recommend a visit if you are ever in Huntsville. You won't regret it and will want to go back again.
My daughter and I and 2 other children went there for a tour and got so much more than we expected. I thought at first the children would get restless but the director's stories kept them so intrigued. It was truly a step back in time and the children are looking forward to the next visit. I highly recommend the tour to all ages. It was a great time. We will be back.
Although I was going just because my wife wanted to, I thought it would be just another old house. Boy, was I wrong. The director gave so much information and told the stories in such a way, that she held your attention through the entire tour. She knew the history of the Weeden house. Her tour was so much better than others I have been to. It was well worth the admission. If only other museum directors could do so well.
We were fortunate to schedule a trip to the Weeden House Museum. The guide was so entertaining and knowledgeable about the house and it's inhabitants that it has encouraged some of us to find out more about Maria Howard Weeden and her works.
We highly recommend this tour.
The Weeden Museum has touched my heart every time I crossed over the threshold. The warmth and spirit feeling leaves you excited about history. The tour by the director is just what everyone talks about, it is like being in front of a stage of a one-woman show. All need to experience it more than once. Sarah James, Huntsville
My wife and I visited the Weeden Museum lately and we were fortunate to have the director give us the tour. She spent over an hour with us giving us a trip back in time and we left so exhilirated. When she got to the poetry, we both felt it and not ashamed to say we cried for it was so beautiful. What a gift Huntsville has in her. Her talents jumped out at us and we are amazed she is not doing this work all over. The way she makes people laugh, cry and feel at home is truly amazing. A star is definitely at the Weeden House.
