Chewacla State Park, Auburn

Camped here with the family over Labor Day Week 2011 in an RV. Enjoyed fishing and geocaching, camping. Mostly clean but could use major improvements all around. Not a bad park for camping; however, you can't overlook its need for major renovations or redeveloping some of its historic structures. Would have loved to have visited in its glory days but unfortunately that was likely 4 or 5 decades ago. Staff could have been friendlier. I can't help but noticing from an activity perspective that this park would be an excellent candidate for a Disc Golf Course. Auburn is a college town without a disc golf course and the closest courses are at least an hour in opposite directions.

We stayed in cabin 6 for the weekend, beautiful view overlooking the lake, very quiet. The lake was very stagnant, we wouldnt swim in the water, we fished non stop for 2 days and caught nothing, not even a nibble. The worst part was that we kept getting bit by what we thought was mosquitos, waking up in the morning with new welps on our bodies, here it is a week later and we are still getting bit, after looking it up online I just discovered that we now have bed bugs! I am 40 years old and have stayed in many hotels around the country and it took going 45 mins away from my home to get bed bugs, thanks alot chewalca, now i have to tear my bedroom apart and clean it from top to bottom, your lake needs a good cleaning up and so do your cabins, especially #6, save your money for some place cleaner, it was a big waste of time and money, I will tell everyone I know to stay away from this place. Take that $200.00 I payed you and clean that cabin. Thanks for the worst weekend ever.

Pros Beautiful view from our cabin, we were right in front of the lake. Deer and wildlife were outside our door every morning, that was pleasant Going out on the canoe was fun The trails and waterfalls were beautiful Staff was friendly. Cons There was a picture a SLAVES in the cottonfield above our bed. Very offensive to us! Not only bc I am African American but also because the town is already known for racism still being prominent today.That was scary as well. Could upgrade tv's or add additonal channels.Luckily we brought a small tv and dvd players so we could watch dvd's. We were given a map and had to find the trails on our own.Almost 800 acres so that was intimidating and 1trail had a caution sign warning you of the high volume of violence in that particular area. Needless to say we didnt go any further or go to the other 4trails we hadnt seen. Overall we had a great time and i would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors. Other reviews mentioned it being unclean, it was the exact opposite outdoors and indoors for us and we were there the whole wk of christmas. Very afforadable for family getaways. Children would enjoy as well. However the picture needs to be removed and def.ruined the romantic day we were having.

I went on a weekday for something to do and avoid any crowds. I explored the park for about 5 hours. There is trash everywhere. There is no signs of any life in the murky oil slicked lake.The waterfall created by the dam looks like an industrial run off. I was very dissapointed.It cost $2 per person to get in. I will never return. The only wild life I saw in 5 hours was a few squirrels. The picnic areas down by the lake were run down. This place needs some cleaning up and revamping. They had 2 tennis courts ,these are a must see. They look like something from a movie set where all humans have died. The staff is uneducated and unfriendly. To call this place a park is a real shame, more like a parking lot.

WE STAYED THERE FOR OUR ANNIVERSARY, WENT BACK FOR FAMILY EASTER PARTY, BEACH WAS NASTY/ STAFF WERE RUDE. I ASKED ABOUT RESERVING CABIN FOR NEXT YEAR, THE YOUNG FELLOW CALLED SUPERVISOR TO SEE HOW IT WAS DONE, I HEARD HER CURSING AND YELLING ABOUT BEING DISTURBED. I DECIDED NOT TO REGISTER. WENT TO PINE MOUNTAIN CABINS, NICER PARK , NICER PEOPLE, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO VISIT THIS PARK, THEY ARE NOT PATRON FRIENDLY, NEED NEW STAFF, PARK RANGER NEVER SMILES, ACTED LIKE IT WAS A DISPOSITION TO ASK HIM A QUESTION..............................

I like to bring friends and family to Chewacla State Park when they visit. It is a pretty park, and they do have some fun activities for everyone. Unfortunately, people don't appreciate it and there is a a lot of trash around the entire park (especially near the water). I had a friend get really sick from accidentally getting a mouth full of water when she went off the diving board. I recommend people visit Chewacla for the day, but don't drink the water and watch your step!

Chewacla is a very historical place and there are little known facts about the park. the first little known fact is that abraham licoln once swam in on of the ponds at chewacla. he did this in the summer of 1857 during a tour of alabama. in the fall of 1907 clark bowie, grandson of the inventor of the bowie knife, used to chase raccoons with his two blood hounds. one night the hounds found a mountain lion and chased it off into the night. the dogs and the mountain lion disappeared and were never seen again. it has been said though that on a cold winter night with a full moon you can hear the ghost of all three running through the woods. Marine General Holland Smith once said that chewacla was the finest piece of land he ever did see. chewacla is a very fine piece of land that has a rich history that is filled with great little pieces of knowledge.

Great place to take pictures of the kids. Best in fall when leaves are changing colors. The falls located below the dam is like no other. Cabins, play ground and beach area give the feel of stepping back in time.

We had a great time camping at Chewacla. The park is a nice place for strolling around and has plenty of picnic shelters. There's a manmade waterfall at the dam and the hike down to it is very easy. I was able to do it while carrying a 24 pound child with no problems. The hike back up was a little harder, but still not too bad. There are a couple of playing fields for touch football, baseball, or just throwing the frisbee. The way they have the campground arranged, all campsites are close to the bathhouse yet you still have some elbow room between you and the next site. The bathhouse was recently remodeled and was nice except there were no mirrors or thrash cans. And the showers could have used a little more privacy; there was not really anywhere to undress in private. Another plus is that it is close to town in case you need to get some things from the store or even want to eat out for a meal. And the Auburn University campus is close as well and it's a nice place for a stroll as well.
