Kentucky Derby Museum
The Kentucky Derby, held annually in Churchill Downs for thoroughbred horses, is often said to be 'The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports'. Kentucky Derby Museum, which is located just outside the race-course, elaborately presents the history of this racing tradition through more than 20,000 items collected over time. Collections include trophies, sculptures, photographs and paintings along with Derby souvenirs and private collection of former horse trainers - Jimmy Jones and Woodford Stephens. The Jim Bolus's collection of documents, articles, hand-written notes and audio interviews are important as these tell you the journey of the derby ever since its initiation in 1875 to the year 1995. Copies of the documents and cassettes can easily be ordered to be made by the museum and these are permitted to be used for research and public display. For more information, contact the museum.
Museum is very nice and complete, a great tribute to the race's history and its past winners. The tour was very nice and thorough. Got to stand in the winner's circle and get as close to the track as possible without hopping over the rail onto the dirt. Only thing I wasn't too high on was our tour guide. She was a bit choppy and at times difficult to understand, but it didn't take away from the experience and she tried hard so we weren't upset about it. It really is a beautiful park, something you must see if in the city.
The Derby Museum is truly a tribute to horse racing. Even if you are not a race fan, it can't help but inspire admiration for the great horses and jockeys that have raced in the Derby. It has wonderful access to past races, and the surround theater is a great innovation. Take a side trip to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington if possible.
We truly enjoyed our visit. The exhibits were attractive, well-done and interesting. There was enough history for the grownups and enough hands-on for the younger ones. The 360 film was stunning. DEFINITELY take the "backtrack" tour! We never imagined we would get so close to the inner workings of the track, and our guide was so much fun. We'll be back.
