The former home of James Jordan, the founder of Valley Junction, which was to become West Des Moines; this restored Victorian Italianate Gothic-style mansion served as a station on the Underground Railroad during the mid-1800s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, the home serves as a museum for the City of West Des Moines and as the office of the Historical Society. It is one of the oldest structures in Polk Country and the oldest in West Des Moines. The Jordan House is open to the public from May to September on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Information by Discover our Town and Wcities Back to Des Moines, IA Overview |
