Filled with elegant American and European furnishings, this Italian Villa-style Victorian mansion was designed by John F. Rague, architect of the Old State Capitols of Illinois and Iowa. Iowa's oldest building, an 1833 settler's log cabin, is also located at the site. It has been skillfully restored and authentically furnished. Owned by the Dubuque County Historical Society, the Mathias Ham House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Ham House is located in Dubuque, Iowa, where I was born and raised and still live today! It is an awesome place to see, in fact our family goes to the Ice Cream Social held there each July 4th. Come see the Ham House and discover the other attractions of Dubuque, Iowa!

NOT IN DES MOINES
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/02/05
I am pretty sure that the Mathias Ham House is in Dubuque, IA...NOT Des Moines IA. Considering they are hours away from each other, I think this is a horrible mistake to list it as Des Moines.

Mathias Ham House Historic Site
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/30/04
This is a wonderful home that has been lovingly restored to its original splendor. The tour guides were both very friendly and well informed. The grounds have a couple of picnic tables which made for a wonderful setting for our lunch just prior to the tour. There are no photoes allowed inside the house and very few postcards in the gift shop. It would have been helpful if more had been available. We bought our tour tickets in combination with the River Museum and therefore received a discount; however, felt this was well worth the regular admission price. There is an introductory film shown prior to the tour which really helps with the background information on the house as well as the family. This is well worth the time (only approximately 1 hour) and is very well signposted to find.
