Jazz Kitchen, Indianapolis

We has reservations on a Friday night. Our server was great the food was mediocre at best. I ordered a medium-rare New York Strip that had no taste, no seasoning and was served medium well. My husband had pecan crusted salmon that was flavorless and over cooked - extremely dry. We were entertaining a client and did not want to seem rude so we ate the meal and did not send it back. I used a credit card at the door for our cover charges and was charged an additional 20%. I ordered a vodka and cranberry juice and had to pay $1.00 for the juice! That was a first. The meal with cocktails, wine at dinner and after dinner drinks was close to $400.00 not including the cover charges. Needless to say we won't be returning.

I've been there many memorable times. I would concider it a blessing if any owner asked a noisy group to move to the 'talking-friendly' area of the restaurant! I was upset to see the owner called racist. The woman who called him that was most likely disturbing other audience members/diners, not to mention, the musicians. The unwritten rule which I'll now apparently have to WRITE IS: "Respect the music, other members of the audience, and be quiet." Do you talk all through a movie in a theater? If you do, then please stay home. Or, you can bring your "company manners" when you venture out, You can talk, but lower voices are sometimes greatly appriciated. This past weekend about 6 of my friends and I decided to celebrate our girlfriends birthday at the JazzKitchen in Broadripple. Within 20 minutes of being there we were approached by the owner who suggested we take a table in the back because we were supposedly so loud that you couldn't hear the crappy band that was playing. However, what we found odd is that the band was so loud that we couldn't even hear what someone sitting next to you was saying without getting closer to the individual talking. Basically we left and received our money back because the owner was racist and treated us like ghetto trash that he didn't want in his establishment. The waitress was slow and didn't ask us if we wanted anything to drink until we were almost out the door. What it boils down to is this I would never set foot again in the JazzKitchen nor would I suggest it to anyone else. I was always told that the clubs in Broadripple were racist but since this was a restaurant I didn't believe that we would have been treated as trashy as we were. This review is not me using the race card this is a honest review of my recent experience at the JazzKitchen. I love the live music and Salsa night Thursdays. The is free salsa lessons and ladies are free before 10 PM. It is newly remodeled and expanded and has a great atmosphere. The food is delicious. Two thumbs up.
