Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon
One of the largest carillons in the world and one of the few open to the public is set in gardens high above Springfield. View bells and playing mechanisms during a narrated tour with video presentation.
This is one of the very few carillons that allow visitors to go up to see the complete operation. Anyone that is interested in keyboard music should not miss this opportunity.
Best part is that there is an elevator so you don't have to go up the six flights of steps!
A large tower and huge bells with concerts held on occasion, but unless one is going to happen while you're there, don't waste your time. Tours up the elevator are $3, not worth it unless a concert is about to begin. Call before hand to find out times. One positive, the carillon has some great views from the top. Probably the best time to take the tour is during the fall when the trees change color. Unfortunately, when I was there, there was neither a concert nor was it the fall season.
