A "must see" while in Springfield for Civil War "Buffs" and Lincoln visitors alike! The building houses the "Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum" and is the National Headquarters for the "National Woman's Relief Corps", the official auxilliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. There is no admission fee but they do accept donations.
The people who run the museum are very helpful and knowedgeable. They have tin-types by Matthew Brady, a complete collection of Edwin Forbes prints and the flag from Ford's theater that J W Booth caught his spur in when he vaulted from the Presidential box. They have everything from civil war weapons to sheet music, drums, fife's and "jew's harps", to original diaries. Definately a "must see" while visiting Springfield!
The GAR memorial museum is perhaps the best of its kind in Springfield. it has priceless artifacts, from the flag Booth tripped over at Ford's Theatre, to the complete set of encampment medallions. The curator was interesting. The best kept secret in Springfield.
We happened upon the GAR museum on our trip to see the Lincoln Library in Springfield. What a treat! The curators are extremely knowledgable and excited to talk about the history and significance of the GAR and related societies. Although the building is small, it is chocked full of interesting artifacts and memorabilia and is a good history lesson for young and old alike. Worth a look.
