Francis Land House
This large, 200-year-old Georgian style plantation home stands as a symbol of the rural affluence enjoyed by the Land family in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The house features period rooms furnished with antiques and reproductions and the grounds include herb, formal, and vegetable gardens, as well as a history park which includes a constructed trail in a wooded wetland with interpretive sign exhibits.
I toured three historical homes and this one is by far my favorite. However I was disappointed that so much of the original home was unavailable to us because of renovations done by previous owners.
The period tour guide was very knowledgable. She described, in detail, the life of the Land families, how they lived, struggled, worked, and played. When she was describing the dances they might have had, you could "feel and hear the music", you "felt" the times.
The minimal cost to tour the house and property is well worth it. I would love to go back, spend more time, and will do more research on line on that period in VA and then have more questions for them.
Touring this home, and land gave us a view into life of early 1800's. We learned about America after the revolution. So many historic sights in this area are pre-revolutionary, that this is one of the very few that allowed us to experience the Federal period. It was not crowded, so we could have a personal tour without being rushed.

connect plantations by the waterway and the third Princess Anne Courthouse built in 1735, which is the reputed site ...
