Gullah Heritage Trail Tours
Explore Sea Island and the Gullah heritage with this tour company that takes you through the neighborhoods and byways of the Gullahs, the island's caretakers. The tour leaves at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.
My husband and I took this tour in December of 2008. It was so interesting. We felt like someone was taking us back in time to the infancy of the island. Since the tour I notice everything when I visited sections of the island. Emory is one of the island's treasures.
Introducing Hilton Head Island -- a tour for everyone!!

Emory introduced us to so many unique things about this island that we had never heard in the past 15 years of trips to HHI. The tour was very professional, yet very personal. Emory made the history of HHI come alive with stories about the families who continue to live here. We would recommend this tour for EVERY visitor to the island.
This trip gives you a view of how the island has really grown, its history, and the very interesting people who have lived on the island - plus if you are not familiar with Gullah, its a chance to get a little introduction to this blend of English and several West African languages.
The tour guide was excellent. Personally, i thought the 'uppity beach' was the high point of the trip but the background on the conflicts over development of the island is really worthwhile.
I've been coming to Hilton Head for almost 10 years to visit my daughter who lives there, but never took the Gullah Tour until this March. I would recommend this tour to EVERY visitor; it gives you a much broader understanding of the area and the colorful history which you don't get from any of the slick brochures. The whole experience was very professionally presented and the tour bus very comfortable. Also, because the tour originates at the Hilton Head Museum, we also toured the wonderful photography exhibit there and looked at the natural history exhibits; we probably would never have stopped at the museum otherwise. A good symbiotic relationship. I can't say enough good about the tour guide. Enjoy!
