Lifesaver
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/3/07
I grew up in the Nineteen forties a block from Schiller Park. Ours was an abusive home. Schiller Park was literally a lifesaver -- a place to be human. We had sewing and craft classes in the summer, slid down the "big hill" on cardboard in the winter, visited the bear den, the little girl with the umbrella, watched the swans in the lake, loved the ginko tree near the lake, skated up and down the sieewalks, broke my wrist on the giant strikers, did the Maypole annually from Siebert School at the park, had Sunday School picnic, and Bible School from St. Paul's Lutheran at the shelter house, spent nearly every waking summer hour at the park, much safer and happier than at home. Such wonderful memories sustained me through life's trials (now nearly 80 yrs. and live far away, but memory is so pleasant) Keep up the good work, and take care of the neighborhood children.
