Schlesinger's Chop House, Newport News

I love love love this restaruant. !!!! I always get the Filet Au Poivre. It reminds me of the 9 Pepper Filet I used to get at Steak and Ale.

The quality of the food definitely did not match the price. The steaks we got were average at best. The service started off okay but when a regular showed up, we were completely ignored. I had to get up and track down the waiter to ask for the check. The waiter happened to be talking to the manager at the time (who we never saw during the evening). The manager never said anything and neither did the waiter. Apparently that was business as usual for them. If they don't smell money, you're treated like dirt.

I have been to this restaurant numerous times now, and each time seems to be even more disappointing. Being a resident of the Port Warwick community, I have become used to the friendly atmosphere of restaurants such as Thaijindesu, and Light. But since Light closed last month, I became a frequent customer of Schlesinger's, and to say the least I am appalled at their customer service. I do not feel as welcome there like I did at other restaurants in the neighborhood, and despite the numerous times of going there, the bartenders never can recall my name. I must admit, the food is very good, but there should atleast be something on the menu for less than $30. The prices of their alcoholic beverages is pretty ridiculous to say the least. For example, a 750 ml (25 oz) bottle of Remy Martin XO would normally cost about $150 retail. But at Schlesinger's, you will pay $31.50 per ounce, and almost $800 for a bottle! For my two glasses of Remy Martin and coke, was $63. This was more expensive than my steak dinner, vegetables, and a beer! Price menus are provided for their wines, but not for common beverages. Unfortunately for me (not being in the restaurant business), I was unaware that I was being charged this much until after I had got my bill. The bartender told me that she thought I already knew how much the drinks cost, but obviously I didn't realize that I was going to be charged almost 6 times what the bottle was worth! Light restaurant had a very nice staff, and I was shocked about their closing. Knowing that Light was bought out by the owner of Schlesinger's, I am very skeptical of how the new establishment will turn out.

I gone there three times & each time the services was absolutely terrible. Each time it was with a party of at least six people. Each time we were seated in the worst place in the restaurant. Three times we had to remind the waitress of something they had forgotten. Based on the amount spent which included drinks, dinner and dessert I would have thought we warranted better service. We were very disappointed & will not be dining there or recommending this place to any of our business associates or friends.

We have always been blown away by the level of food, service and atmosphere. My husband was stationed at Fort Eustis for about a year and it was our first anniversary so we wanted a really elegant dinner. We are hooked we now go back at least once a year from North Carolina.

Talk about top notch. My wife and I had such a good time here. Our steaks were cooked perfectly that is medium rare. I wouldn't recomend going to this restaurant if your one of these people that like their steak above medium, wich if you know anything about steaks you would recognize this place as a great place. I'm from the midwest also and I know good steak from growing up in a steak restaurant. Most people will say it pricey but you get what you pay for. These are the type of place that make me never again want to go to any of the restaurants i've reviewed again, especially cookie cutter corporate businesses.

I expected my steak to be well-seasoned. The bananas foster cheesecake desert was small and tasteless. The crabcakes were good, however. It was also very expensive compared to other restaurants in Newport News. I expected a truly outstanding meal, and Schlesinger's absolutely did not deliver more than an average one.
