San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA)

Description

Opened in 1995, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art houses a permanent collection of over 15,000 works, including 4,700 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and 9,000 photographs. The museum has exhibited the works of Henri Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn, Dorothea Lange, Paul Klee, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney and many contemporary artists. Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the space itself is a wonder to behold. The lobby floor, for instance, is a massive chessboard. Gargantuan sculptures hang from above. This art gallery is located near the Yerba Buena Gardens.

Double decker bus ride to a private party
By ,
After opening the Hotel on Cyril Magnum ( in 84 )Drive, we hired a double decker bus, all of us with champagne bottles in our hands and had a birthday party within the museum , cake and champagne , and we all gathered at a very large table to celabrate our friends birthday. We were also allowed to wander through the museum, God, I love museums, But This one was one of the best I have ever been in,,,,,Every one who visits the city should put their walking shoes on and wander in, and leave the madness of cars, noise, and come in and relax and revel in the arts. Karen Roberts 891 Winding Trail, Holly Lake Ranch, TX. Peace, love and don't forget the flowers in your hair, Kiss xo

Gift Shop
By ,
Modern Art is not one of my favorite things, so I never spend money to go into the museum. However the gift shop is one of the best gift shops of any museum I have been to. I would reccommend anyone go to the free gift shop first I can always find something interesting to buy there. So many of the things make great thoughtful gifts.

Great Family Activity
By ,
Modern art of such a wide variety that there is something for every age of art lover. Try taking your children to an educational experience they will never forget. Art appreciation begins at an early age. My daughter & I had a great time & picked out an art postcard after in the gift shop of our favorite piece of artwork that we saw that day. An inexpensive reminder of our trip together to the MOMA.

Love the architecture
By ,
You must visit this museum. I like the exhibits, museum store and the wonderful restaurant next door. Parking is a problem so, park at the Mission ST garage a couple of blocks away. As a member, the receptions they have prior to a new exhibit can be nice.

Thank God for artististic explanations
By ,
I've never ever liked an art museum until yesterday. The museum helps you understand what you're looking at and helps you understand why it's important with little blurbs to the side of selected paintings. It gives you context without telling you what to think. Thank you so much for becoming my liasion to art SFMOMA. I am forever in your debt as I know love art.

Love the building not the contents
By ,
Skip this place! Instead go to the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor Museum. Some of the mordern "art" I might have called interesting, however there were a few pieces that pretty much left me completely turned off. There was a urinal (appeared to be used). There was blank canvas with a florecsent light next to it. There was painted squares. There was paint thrown onto a canvas. There was a very nice portrait painting that looked like a photograph.
