San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA)
Description
Opened in 1995, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art houses a permanent collection of over 15,000 works, including 4,700 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and 9,000 photographs. The museum has exhibited the works of Henri Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn, Dorothea Lange, Paul Klee, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney and many contemporary artists. Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the space itself is a wonder to behold. The lobby floor, for instance, is a massive chessboard. Gargantuan sculptures hang from above. This art gallery is located near the Yerba Buena Gardens.
There are ever changing exhibts and the location is right across from the Sony Metreon. A mix of art and technology! Great for families and art aficionados alike.
The SFMOMA is a wonderful place for anyone interested in art, or interested in learning themselves some culture.
The SFMOMA puts on a wide variety of different types of exhibits for all people to enjoy. They have art-deco exhibits (my personal favorites), as well as some older art, and some fantastic new art from the world's up and coming artists.
SFMOMA is centrally located in San Francisco and leaves you easy access to the Union Square shopping district, the Metreon, and many other exciting attractions making for a wonderful day trip addition!
One of the worlds leading museums of modern and contemporary art, SFMOMA features paintings, sculptures, photographs, and multimedia works. If you want to explore the contemporary art, SFMOMA is your most choice.
I was able to see a magnificent collection of Marc Chagall works all in one location at the MOMA in 2004; it was one of the best exhibits I've ever been to.
The SFMOMA building itself is simply amazing. Wide open spaces, but it still gives a feeling of comfort. It is right downtown in UNION SQUARE, next top all sort of really fun stuff.
I am a currator, so going to MOMA is a really incredible experience for me. They never fail to totally blow me away, from Henery Mattise to all the modern installations.
You must visit this museum. I like the exhibits, museum store and the wonderful restaurant next door. Parking is a problem so, park at the Mission ST garage a couple of blocks away. As a member, the receptions they have prior to a new exhibit can be nice.
The SF MOMA makes for a great day trip. Beautiful building with awesome architecture. Always well done exhibitions. Nice cafe with lovely atmosphere. Bring kids to the museum store. Nice selection of art books for kids as well as adults. We like it so much, that we have become members.
