Beach Blanket Babylon
Beach Blanket Babylon started 30 years ago, springing from the creative mind of impresario Steve Silver, as a rag-tag collection of bizarrely costumed street theater performers. San Francisco, at the end of the continent, has always been on the cutting edge, and Silver's far out concept quickly found a home in the City by the Bay. Beach Blanket Babylon is a fairy tale for adults, wherein Snow White takes a fast-paced musical journey in search of her Prince Charming. Along the way, Snow White encounters a star-studded, always changing, always contemporary line up of hilarious pop culture characters like Rush Limbaugh, Oprah Winfrey, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Jackson, Martha Stewart, George W. Bush, Britney Spears and the gang from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, just for good measure! This preposterous romp is music, mayhem, madness and altogether an amazing night of nut-cake cabaret and razor sharp satirical wit. Beach Blanket Babylon is a must see for San Francisco tourists and locals. Nightly shows are Adults Only, minors welcome at Sunday matinees.Prices: $25-$78.
We loved our Saturday night at Beach Blanket Babylon but on Sunday night at 5PM we returned to North Beach and saw Carolina Lugo’s & Carolé Acuña’s Brisas de España Ballet Flamenco show at Peña Pachamama Restaurant at 1630 Powell Street, (Union & Green). The show is called The Heart & Passion of North Beach combines the pulsating sounds of footwork, song, castanets, syncopated hand clapping and guitar which better then anything we saw in Spain last summer, The food and wine was great, and resonable priced
Beach Blanket Babylon was so funny I think I laughed through the whole thing. I went with 3 generations of women age's 21-75 and it was fine. The theater is small but it doesn't matter once the performance begins. I'm going to take my husband next time!
I'm not into musicals but this show definitely is well worth seeing. It is hilarious and very entertaining. There are excellent uses of skits on current events. Parts of the show did drag a bit but all in all, a must see.
The costumes are fantastic and the hats/wigs are something to remember(they are known for them). We bought our tickets at TIX in union square at a discount, but it was worth full price. Great non stop entertainment. The jokes were witty and current. Great production, costumes and talent. I laughed out loud. 90 minutes of fun.
LOL!! This show is non-stop laughing out loud! The writters behind this show are amazing, the actors are hilarious. And talk about costumes, and wigs! Bring cash though you have to pay for your water too! This is definitly worth the money, if not more!
Beach Blanket Babylon is a rare treat for the players and the audience. It is about Big Hair, Big Hats and Big Laughs. Without hesitation I can say that everyone who saw the play or will see the musical review in the future will exit laughing.
What I liked about the play was up to the moment satire of public figures on a non-stop basis.
The only thing that I didn't like about the play is that I can't see it on an everyweek basis.
I personally recommend this play to anyone who has a sense of the absurd and can risk laughing their heads off for the duration of the revue.
I have lived in SF for 25 years and have seen this show about that many times. It is a great show and it changes with the times. It is a classic comedy/skit/singing/current event parody. It is constantly changing and is always great. When I leave I wonder why I don't go more often.
I believe the name of the theatre is Fugazzi. It's near China-town. It's an intimate, relaxed setting.. UNTIL.. the performance begins! Then it becomes an intense fun-filled 90 minutes (i beleive) of song and dance and cliches with the most outragous costumes! The characters are the most talented group of performers imaginable. You feel like you really get to know them and LOVE them. We had 4 generations of family with us and we each laughed and clapped and sang along at times. This is a must see performance. And it's been playing for 30 years! It changes with the times and I hear it always gets better with age!
Beach Blanket Babylon -- A combination of a musical and comedy show. This show is unique and culturally American. The material is updated every six months to be current on happenings both in the United States and local San Francisco.
Custumes are original. Laughs abound. A good time is always had by all.
If you like a campy comedy and musical revues, you shouldn't miss this. Beach Blanket Babylon is an institution in San Francisco. Local fans often go back again and again because they update their show regularly to keep up with noteworthy current events. The performances are great. The costumes are jawdropping in their zaniness.
The cozy theater is situation in the heart of North Beach, which has tons of fun restaurants and cafes.
