Owned and operated by cattle ranchers from the Azores, this ranch offers tours of the scenic, isolated West Maui Mountains. The tour guides lead small groups through taro fields and rain forests, straight down to the Pacific Ocean. A few different tour options are available. Two "Aloha Rides" depart daily; each lasts two hours. A longer ride is also offered, and you have the option of adding a full barbecue lunch if you pay a little more. A deluxe helicopter-horseback combination tour is offered in conjunction with Sunshine Helicopters . Call for more information.
This was a wonderful trail ride. My husband has only ridden about 3 times whereas I ride four times a week. We both enjoyed this ride. The guides gave people horses according to to their skills and so we were all able to enjoy it. Plus this is the first trail ride I have ever been allowed to do more than walk. They had two places during the trail where you could run if you were on an advanced horse. It was great! I never gallop in my weekly dressage rides.
I would warn that the horses do go fast. I had to hold on tight the first time and did feel like I might fall off at first. It feels the same as when a horse bolts. So if you aren't ready for that or just enjoy a slower pace ask for an easier horse. The advanced horses will run whether you want to or not. The horses were well trained and those that ran would run to where they were supposed to stop.
The views were excellent and it was nice to be able to enjoy them at a slower pace than what the road allows. This was on land that was hard to see any other way. Also it was pretty cheap compared to other rides. It was supposed to be a two and a half hour ride but was more like a three hour ride. I've paid this much for hour long rides elsewhere.
This was the most enjoyable part of our visit to Maui. Everyone we dealt with at Mendes Ranch was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Our guides were incredible, fun and accomadating. Highly recommended. I can't wait to go back. Definitley the highlight of our vacation.
