Kepaniwai Park and Heritage Gardens
Established in 1952, this park is dedicated to preserving Maui's ethnic heritage, including Hawaiian, Portuguese, Japanese, Caucasian and Filipino cultures. As you stroll the lush tropical gardens, you'll see several thatched-roof Hawaiian huts, a Portuguese villa, a New England "saltbox" and a Japanese garden with a stone pagoda. This is a wonderful location for a family picnic or a "getting-to-know-you" date. It's located just next to the Nature Center in Iao Valley.
We really liked this place. Found it on the way back from Iao Valley and decided to check it out. Some beautiful plants and flowers. Wasn't crowded so it was a peaceful bonus find. There's also a bamboo path. Well worth a half hour of your time especially since there's no cost involved.
As residents of Maui, we welcomed the idea when friends from Oahu visited us and were interested in seeing Kepaniwai Park. We never returned to the park after having disgusting experiences when we gathered there for picnics and parties with friends in the past. So, we were curious as to how things have changed, after seeing your website images and descriptions of the beauty of the place today.
Our visit was as disappointing and disgusting as it had been years before. There were animal poop everywhere and smelled of it in all direction we ventured. Flies everywhere, so don't even think of having a picnic there. The ponds were stagnant and murky. The yard showed some maintenance, but many areas were neglected. One visitor was seen washing her shoes in the sink after she had stepped on dog poop.
Visitors and locals alike, don't waste your time and money on this place.
This park is free to use. There are picnic tables for picnics and many ponds with very large koi with different styles of gardens and structures from different cultures to explore. It's a nice stop after seeing the Iao Needle because it's right down the street.
