La Perouse Bay
The French explorer La Perouse discovered this historical landmark after Haleakala's last eruption in 1788. The eruption had recently destroyed the settlement of Keoneoio. Parts of the village remain intact today, and a strip of lava running through the bay has changed the shoreline permanently. The lava rock and desolate surroundings make for an eerie atmosphere. The bay is at the end of Makena Alanui. The terrain is really only appropriate for a four-wheel drive, and the beach is made up mostly of lava rock. It offers prime scuba and snorkel conditions, and can be a good surf spot as well, but it is not a great spot for picnics or suntanning.
This is one of those hidden gems for snorkeling. We saw a blue-fin tuna here and the tropical fish are abundant. Don't make the mistake that most tourist make and expect to just get out of your car and jump in the water. To get there, you have to hike 20-30 minutes along a lava rock path. Make sure to wear shoes. It's an interesting hike, and you'll be treated to some great snorkeling where you may even see dolphins early in the morning.
This is one of the places the locals go to snorkle and scuba. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes as you will be walking over lava rocks that are hot, hot, hot! Take soft towels to sit on and enjoy the view even if you don't go into the water. To snorkle, you must go out a little way from the shore to a reef but it is relatively easy. The drive there shows you some of the most spectacular homes in Maui. Do not tell your rent-a-car agency that you are going there, however. The road is narrow and rough but totally passable.
